Description
A Legionary's Life lets you play as a Roman soldier during the years of the Second Punic War and beyond. Rise up through the ranks and win prestigious awards or just focus on making it home in one piece; it's up to you.

This is a unique single-player game with RPG elements, extensive usage of attribute and skill checks, a turn-based combat system involving many variables and a touch of roguelike features.

In this game you will not be the hero who wins battles alone; you will be more like a gear in a much larger machine.

Features:

  • Live through (or die in) carefully reconstructed battles of the The Hannibalic War and the ensuing Second Macedonian War from the point of view of a pre-Marian Roman legionary.
  • Start as a poorly skilled conscript soldier in the middle of the Second Punic War. See how long you can remain alive and eventually become a respected veteran.
  • Permadeath: when your legionary dies, it's game over. However, the points earned by your most successful characters can be spent to enhance your future ones.
  • Dozens of random events affecting your life as a legionary.
  • Replay value. You will only see a fraction of the game in each run.
  • Turn-based combat system involving fatigue, morale, reach, confined space, high ground and more. Always keep your Stance high or you'll become a lot less effective and open to attacks. Adjust your Attitude to increase your odds of survival.
  • Frequent skill/attribute checks based on your values and the difficulty of the task at hand. For example, a good relevant attribute might give you a high chance to succeed at a specific task. If the chance is, say, 80%, it means you can still fail sometimes. Exceptionally high stats may even guarantee success, but they are difficult to attain.
  • Win rewards based on the real decorations used in the Roman army at the time, including Civic Crowns, Mural Crowns and Armillae.
  • Rise through the ranks in your maniple and become a Centurion. Or don't, and just try to survive until the end of the war.
  • Equip yourself with swords, helmets and armors from the mid-Republic era.

Fun concept

This game has a fun concept for those into turn based, Roman history, and roguelike games. The complaints about RNG seem to be from people that either don't understand the game is a roguelike that gives favorable assistance to distribute on your character in successive runs at the start, or that simply don't like RNG in games to begin with. That said, this definitely is a roguelike type game. Your first run will likely be like mine and end quite quickly when you get too eager to volunteer for dangerous combats during a battle. The first battle has been going so well and you're figuring out how resopnding to events will raise particular stats, and then you volunteer to fight the hardened guys when you were told you didn't have to. After the first death coming that quickly I felt foolish for overextending myself. Then upon next start I saw a new interface that allowed distribution of points gained from my previous score. While I didn't have many points, I could already see the potential. Attributes could be raised for a certian cost, better starting gear could be purchased with these points, and even increasing your starting denarii purse. My next game went much further and I attained a much higher score. This enabled me to get decent equipment for the next character. I then could pass events like being hailed by slings when assaulting a wall without taking damage. On and on after successive runs the pool of points for distribution at the start only continued to grow. Now the foolish mistake I had made on my first run was a viable choice to gain better standing with my officers and additional loot. Launching me to a promotion even after the first battle. Those saying the RNG 'ruins' this game either dislike RNG in general, or don't realize the nature of the reward system upon successive runs or which stats to focus on at what time or what combat actions should be taken when.

Fun little game ruined by awful combat

I am a Latin teacher and an old fart and so an old-timey text-based RPG based on Roman history is right up my alley. I enjoy the setting and the attention to detail, but the combat is just awful. Miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss miss he hit me miss miss miss miss miss miss he hit me miss miss miss miss die. I hope they fix this element because the game is neat and unique. Heck, even if I just died faster I would be happier.

Worth it

A well made, text based roguelike rpg. You need to like reading, because while there are graphics in this game, they are mostly there for atmosphere and most of the meaningful things in this game happen via text. However, while text-based, the user interface in this game is nice and has a modern feel. You won't feel like you are on some terminal. The storytelling is good and engaging. I'm not a connaisseur, but based on what I learned in school, I felt like they conveyed the atmosphere of the army and epic battles in the time of Roman military conquests very well. A combination of your choice of stats, event choices and ability to navigate the battle system will determine the particular path of your progress in the game (I finished the game once and did reasonably well, but I wasn't at the highest rank and felt like I could have done better). Depending on your choices, you can be anywhere from a lowly battle fodder to one of the commanders of the army (either way, if you don't die, the game will unfold right up to the end, you won't change history). The game is not too long (I finished my first time after 10-15 hours of gameplay), though you'll die a lot and need to retry often before you can aspire to the highest goals in the game (doing well in past games will improve the abilities of new characters making higher goals more easily achievable). Otherwise, I haven't used a chronometer, but once you got the feel of things (know the battle system well, know which stats to try, know which paths to take during choice times and speed through a lot of the text), I think you could probably finish this game in under an hour. Failure and discovery on subsequent replays (from the start) is the meat of this game. Overall, well worth it for people who enjoy reading and are curious about the time of roman military conquests.

Amazing indie roman legionary simulator

The game is modest in visual terms, but the gameplay is very good. It's worth a try, especially if you like the Roman setting.
