I loved this story-game. I do feel I become a part of an already outlined story – and therefore just have to follow along the ride - but I am glad I could be a part of that story because it is beautiful. The game is very short and the ordinary price is more then I think it should be, but I bought it under the fall sale for 1/4 of the price, which I feel is right compered to the length of the game. The game is very well made and emotional. It has no text so you just have to react to what you see and hear – the music is great and there are a lot of sound effects - and come to conclusions. I will play this game again soon.
I had to right this review after reading the line "this is not a tear jerker" in another review. I guess it depends on the kind of person you are. If you have compassion for all living things, not just humans, this is indeed a tear jerker. I out and out cried at the end. Partly because it was over perhaps! Truly an engaging and beautiful game. My husband gave it to me as a gift and I have just purchased To the Moon to continue my journey. I like gentle, emotionally reflective games and I am sure this was fulfill my need to continue the boy with bird adventure.
And for those who worry about price, there can be no complaints there. Thanks GOG!
Really touching story about a boy and a bird. Can you call it a game - not directly. It's more like interactive story-telling. But the story is great and music is very atmospheric. Nice, short and heartwarming story. Totally worth buying.
It's not exactly a game, it's more likely an experience. I bought it on sale and it was worth the money, despite the not very high reviews by users. It's not exactly a Visual Novel, not exactly a Point and Click, not exactly a Videogame, not exactly a book.
It's a digital work of art with brilliant graphic and excellent and appropriate OST.
It's very short but don't they say that good games don't last long?
to the moon was a beautiful piece of art that did a handful of things most games don't bother trying: sure, there was some laughter and certainly, there were a handful of scares, but to the moon was a rare thing in gaming: it made you empathize with the characters. given the right frame of mind, it could make you cry.
a bird story is shorter and lighter in tone - it doesn't pack the kind of emotional wallop that to the moon did, but it's story-telling is strong and full of gentleness - the kind of storytelling that gaming - as a whole - seems to [mostly] lack.
there are no puzzles here, and the game almost literally tells you what to do, but even so, the interaction between the main character and the bird is effortless and sweet.
the one notable thing in this game is that there is absolutely no dialogue. there's the implication of dialogue in the way some things end up happening. [a character asks your character to get things, but even then, they're shown as icons, not in the form of a dialogue box] but by and large, the story-telling lives and dies on the strength of the visuals and the soundtrack.
as always with a freebird game, the soundtrack is beautiful. we have the gamut of themes here: melancholy, silly, laid back. and all of it ties in well to make the scenes wonderfully dense with emotion.
while the graphics are "sixteen bit" i still feel this is the right choice for this style of game where the narrative is carried by the ambiance of the soundtrack - sure, the graphics matter - but the graphics here all convey exactly what they mean with no ambiguity.
should you buy this game? absolutely, if you are interested in supporting quality story telling and you enjoyed to the moon, i can wholeheartedly recommend a bird's story.
on the other hand: if you want more game with your plot, you'd be better suited buying something else.
for my money, this was well worth the price. i am truly glad gaming still has some story tellers.
