A rather fantastic adventure

Note: Based on the Android version The game is based on Phileas Foggs travels around the world in 80 days however the games world is almost steampunkish in its design with Robots and underwater trains etc and its fleshed out well enough that the world does actually feel convincing. You play as Phileas Foggs trusty companion and you make decisions on what to buy and which routes to take which are all unique and offer a large amount to discover during repeat playthroughs. The game is for the most part a text adventure with a few drawings here and there for some perspecitive. The game I believe is significantly cheaper on mobile which makes it hard to justify this version however I do 100% recommend this game on its own merits.

Unique, engaging, well-written adventure

The game is truly unique, though based on an old concept. It is truly Around the World in 80 days though its ultimately a choose-your-own-adventure book. I have played approximately 8 trips around the world, and although it does get easier as you understand the tricks, it is well worth the price in exploring all the different possible storylines based on the actions you take, and the directions you go. Not only can you depict the direction of the adventure, but you can also alter your characters personality as you go along (albiet to minimal game changing effect, outside of your masters behavior). There is some repitition, but I've already sunk more than 30 hours into this game and still enjoying the experience everytime. A must play, purely for its uniqueness. A well written story with a large number of possibilities. I hope that more games like this come out in future.

Way too repetitive

I played 80 days for around a week - and I found it to be way too repetitive to be enjoyable. I'm a huge Jules Verne fan and had high hopes, but basically the game is just a multiple choice quiz askin you to select routes and luggage items. I can't recommend it.

80 Days ... for a lifetime of play

Note: Based on Steam Mac version A delightfully unique game that has something for everyone, 80 Days is one of those rare experiences where every playthrough gives you a radically altered version of yourself. You wouldn't think that there could be such depth of gameplay simply by making choices, but the variety - even among a mere 100+ cities to visit - astounds: murder-intrigue, revolution, terrorist acts, underwater worlds, strange machine-men and more pop up and into your trip, occurring whether you want them to or not. Just when you think something won't happen ... it does! Of more import, however, is how the game choices "shape" your character, Passepartout. You are the ostensible valet to Phileas Fogg on his travels, but are responsible for not merely accompanying him but also keeping him healthy and comfortable, choosing your course and mode of travel, and find that you (quite sneakily) have a greater influence on your surroundings than you would have ever thought possible. You can encounter love in a wasteland or in a cozy club. You can watch murder and horrible political suppression, and even engage in a criminal underworld of human slavery. I was aghast to discover how quickly I could sell my morals just to try to finish the trip in 80 days. I am, evidently, not as good a man as I think I am. Sadly, yet truthfully, 80 Days can reveal the depths of our own depravity and tragic circumstance. Telltale Games has created several fascinating games based upon text and choice, but they hardly hold a candle to the deep and engaging experience of 80 Days. There is TRUE choice here, balancing the precarious edge between player selection and a living world that actively interjects. Few games have managed this so superbly. I've only finished the game 4 times so far, but I expect many, many more trips will be required before I have exhausted its joys and secrets.

It seems, my master is a gambling man...

By now, I’ve gone around the world countless times and every journey has felt like a new experience. Every time you complete a circumnavigation, additional stories and events unlock, giving you even more incentive to try again. While it is quite accessible and easy to play, it is still missing some kind of tutorial, explaining the basic steps you have to take. Nevertheless, the game gives lots of hints at various moments, compensating for this. Quite unfortunately, this very person has to be a proficient speaker of English, due to the game’s language level and a missing translation. The developers state, that “it is not just the script, but also the logic that stitches sentences together from pieces, based around what the player has done. Translation is most likely impossible. “ I have experienced well told stories: 80 Days can be funny, entertaining, and exciting. It can be sad, scary, moving, and melancholic. It all depends on the path you take and the choices you make; Every trip is a whirlwind of emotions, and by the end you feel like you have gone on a personal, almost physical, journey. Completing one game will make you want to pause for a moment, giving you room for your own thoughts on the wide range of topics, the game discusses during your trip. The thing I like most about this game is that not being successful is absolutely possible. You put effort into your adventure, develop emotions, and yet - you can still fail. Oddly, it still does not feel like loosing the game, thinking about the marvels you saw, the experiences you made, and the people you met. Conclusively, I can absolutely recommend this game; in my opinion it is a solid 9/10. This adventure is beautifully written, delightful and thrillingly unpredictable. Inkle impressively proved that you do not need an incredible budget, fast-paced action, or intense graphics for producing high-quality games. Of course you should enjoy a good reading, but even if you don’t – give it a try.
