Store page information isn't quite right

OK, here's what you want to know: There were three versions released of this game. The base game in 1994 with 10 aircraft and 2 factions, then there was 1942: The Pacific Air War Scenario in 1995 that brought the flyable planes up to 16, added the Japanese and American Armies as playable factions as well as both the Philippines and New Guinea areas, and added multiplayer, along with 300 new missions. Finally there was 1942: The Pacific Air War Gold, which bundled the two packages together and added historical multimedia movies detailing flying techniques and the historical battles. The description on this page would suggest that you're buying the base game from 1994 only. Instead, you're getting the Gold version. All planes, factions and areas are included here. Though I haven't found any sign of the multimedia movies yet. Many have complained about ear shattering digital sound distortion on the Steam version of this game. Thankfully there are no audio problems in this release. To all outward appearances (to someone who's never played this game before) it runs just as intended, with one exception: My trusty Thrustmaster joystick seems to have a non-existent deadzone in this game. Unlike other GOG flight sims like Red Baron that work perfectly, this one needs several calibrations on every startup, and even then you never quite eliminate a slight jitter. This game has an enormous amount of ground to cover during missions, but any attempt to fast travel without autopilot will send your plane spinning into the ground in a matter of seconds. It's frustrating having to be so hands on during long flights, but once in combat all control problems melt away as you find yourself in some furious and truly brutal aerial melees. The AI does NOT mess around in this game. I'm still getting to grips with the game's many systems, but I'm really looking forward to jumping into the star feature: Carrier Battles. Won't let me calibrate joystick

I kept trying to play the game but the configuration screen won't let me calibrate the joystick or gamepad. The cursor is impossible to control no matter how many times I try to drag it over the calibrate joystick option. Then I tried to just play with either mouse or keyboard control, both of which were useless so it looks like no trip down memory lane for me.

For what it's worth......

In this GOG review climate of "good reviews only cronyism, shillism and fanboism posrepped to buggery by said giant clique of "cronies, shills and fanbois" there is little point me giving a critical review. It will only be negrepped by those shits. But I will have my say and up yours to anyone negrepping it. This is just too old. The VGA graphics are terrible. It's difficult enough to identify what it is right in your gunsights on much higher res sims such as IL2 1946 (when info labels are turned off), but on this blocky mess it is impossible. Scenery is either a dire mush of green pixels or blue pixels, depending on whether you are over land or water. It is also very slow with barely 5FPS. Good job this was just 60p or so. In fact just buy IL2 1946 instead, that has everything 1942 has - except for the "carrier battle" mode, and another 100x more besides. You won't miss "carrier battles" as the omniscient cheating enemy AI renders it unplayably difficult and unfair.

Old but still quite good

Played today after some 24 years of really good moments by 1994-1995. OK, graphics is very old but the game is still very good. We can dream of the same game with the actual technology. Some recomenations if you find this problems. With the mouse of joystick in promenade by the left of the screen, edit dosbox_1942paw(config file) [joystick] section, and changed "timed" from timed=true" to timed=false". Then is OK and you can calibrated the Joystick normally. If you flaps dont extend try Alt Gr + [ Happy flights.

Fun!

I've played Their Finest Hour and a couple of other 90's flight sims and this is just like those games. There's fun to be had here. If you find yourself crashing when you time skip, it's because you're running out of fuel probably. I made the mistake of copying the computer planes by dropping my external fuel tank just before combat. Don't, and you'll be fine. Oh, and unless you're a masochist, play with accurate flight model off.
