MovingArtillery: Homeworld
Similar to World in Conflict: Complete Edition, I really like the story of this game. That said, I was and still am not really that good at this game lol. Why? I guess it's because the game can be super intense sometimes. Also, if you're planning on getting this game, know that you shouldn't be too greedy and flood your battalion with as many ships as possible in the campaign, because if I remember correctly (please correct me if I'm wrong), in the final mission, the number of the enemy's units will be adjusted to how many friendly ships you have at your disposal. Therefore, if you happen to have too many, be prepared for the worst.

Zimerius: Also, add the player's patch, this adds numerous fixes to the game Gearbox for some reason never came around to fix, and adds a difficulty slider to the game. Download it here
Thanks! I never knew such patch existed. To show my gratitude, there is this youtube channel I found long ago in which the youtuber would commentate on the multiplayer matches of Homeworld Remastered (Deserts of Kharak too). Sure he does other games as well, but his commentary on Homeworld multiplayer matches is what attracted me to his channel in the first place. Maybe you could check the channel out if you're interested.

No problem :)
Warhammer 40,000: Sanctus Reach
If you like Warhammer 40,000, you might want to check this game out. I don't play tabletop games, but I've heard that this game tries to stay true to the mechanics of its tabletop game counterpart. I guess the only limitation that this game has is the lack of factions available, since from what I read, fans of the game have said that this game only follows the lore that takes place in that particular setting, and therefore only the factions involved in the event of Sanctus Reach are included in the game (you have to buy the DLCs to get access to the other factions though).

Frozen Cortex
This is a robotized American football game. From what I know, not that many people play this game, which is quite a shame in my opinion. That said, what I love about this game is the super smart AI. Before explaining that further, I have to tell you that this game is a kind of hybrid turn-based game where you don't exactly play in turns against the other player, but instead, both you and the other player get to decide your move at the same turn (just like Civilization IV's multiplayer, which can be quite a mess at times lol). Only once both players have decided on their moves (you and your opponent), will you be able to see how your tactics finally unfold against the tactics of the other player. Therefore, once you've finished your turn, you either have to wait for the other player to finish their planning, or you jump straight into the action (seeing the game plays out).

Now here's the problem (well, not exactly a problem, but more of the part where I get to tell you why I say the AI in this game is super smart). Usually when you play against an AI in this kind of games (like chess, or any other board games I guess), the AI will immediately respond with a move the moment you've finished your turn. Not in this game though. Sometimes, the AI will take more time to plan their players' moves (you move the players of your team individually. Remember, it's a sports game), to the point that even after you've finished your move, you'll have to wait for the AI to finalize and finish theirs. This only shows how insanely smart they are honestly. And this is also further translated into the game actually, since the AI appears to be smart enough to try to block any possible passageways available for your players to take to reach the other side. Lastly, before you call the AI cheating like in some RTS games, I honestly don't think this is the case for this game. Since (based on my understanding) AI cheating in strategy games actually means the AI having more resources than the human player at the start of the match and therefore able to deploy more units faster, Frozen Cortex is a turn-based game that doesn't require any such resources. Besides, it is always possible to beat them if you're smart enough.

Again, all the games I've mentioned can be found here on GOG.

Just noticed this game over on steam. 5 nations. Described by many as a competent retro styled RTS. Of course, in space, like brand new, a lot of positive reviews, huge single player campaign and maybe even fun for multiplayer. Why didn't anyone mention battle-realms?
An RTS with realy innovative resource-management. (addtionial to rice and water, there is ying and yang, which you earn just by fighting. This is used for upgradeing and research.
And the units you can recruit are all trained, not recruited. They spawn automatically as pawns and can be trained then to solderies with various purposes and abilities. Even horses must be trained and manually ridden. There are no direct cavalery units. (and one faction captures horses as fodder for other animals...)

And it's availabel here, on GoG.

For real nostalgia:
- Magic Carpet (more action, than strategy, though.)
- Battle Isle-series. All except of IV. But only because the concept just doesn't work... (a mix of RT and TB. But without time-limit. building is RT, battles are TB. But you can build faster, than you can diestroy, because of that.. sadly.)

a niche-rts on steam is
- Grey Goo. With interesting concepts for every faction.

Hey, Battle Realms looks really nice... how did I missed it?
Going to check it out, thanks!
Speaking of advanced resource-management, there is a pretty unique game called Amazing Cultivation Simulator, but for me it looks way too hardcore in terms of macro.

Mainly because of the accessibility, i presume.
If someone asked for some pointers to dive into the rts genre, i belief it would be prudent to start of with the niche, as you called it, games such as Grey Goo or maybe Age of Empires, Command and Conquer remastered since those are the basic, easy to learn 'hard' to master games meant to appeal to a big crowd of gamers. Also, I would certainly steer away from naming oldies just to avoid any graphical disappointment.

JackWhite1328: Hey, as far as I know, strategies are not as popular now as they used to be. But I really hope that I will find connoisseurs of this genre here who will help me dive in and experience this genre.
If you've never really played a strategy game before, you best bet is to start off with something like Heroes of Might & Magic 2 or 3. Once you get a hang of TBSes we'll talk about Dark Reign. Richter 7.5! :P

Alpha Centauri, any Civilization game, Master of Orion 1 and 2, Imperium Galactica 2, Panzer Corps.

I never was really into RTS but I kind of liked Earth 2050 in that you could build units and carry them over to subsequent levels as long as they survived (which they mostly didn't).

Battle for Wesnoth . Not only is it free and great turn based strategy game, but it has enough content to last you a lifetime.

Trooper1270: REPORTED!
Don't quote spam, dude. Just hit the report button and don't reply; that only makes it worse.
Is the OP still reading this thread? :)

Anyway, I am having fun with Othercide right now. It plays ever so slightly to my perversions. And it turns out tactical rogue-like is not a bad thing.

I also recommend GOG-only Supreme Commander 2 to achievement hunters. It's single player only. It's gameplay, especially skirmish, is enjoyable in a way I cannot explain, even though I suck at RTS despite having played them since Dune II.

Speaking of which, Dune II. I think it's freeware now, with some much needed modern QOL features. But it is amazing to see the grandfather of RTS, and how it has stayed the same all these years. I don't want to debate about that other Sega game.

Ah, the Red Alert games, for the FMV of course.
