Great game!

The game is great, a real flashback to my teenage years. But this version using doxbox is very sub par. If you purchase this game, make sure to go get ScummVM, it has the ZEngine which was written by someone to specifically play the zork games built into it. It solves pretty much every issue. Such as, panning speed/stutter and video clips having the ugly black lines in them. It also adds in subtitles and the drop down menu on the top just like the windows version has. And all you have to do is download the fonts, and show it where the game files are. So buy this version to support GOG, but get ScummVM to play the game. Thats why only 3 stars instead of 4 or 5, because we have to use a 3rd party app.

A seriously good adventure!

I played this some time ago and just fell in love with the atmosphere! It's the only one I've played (so far), and some reviewers said that the puzzles were a bit hard, but really, the soundtrack is just so good you'll want to just sit alona at night and play 'till all hours. I've been hoping Gog would release this one, and it is a beauty, many many hours of adventuring, that you can take your time over and just admire the world. Quite atmospheric, as I said, your often wondering whether the nemesis is going to pop out from behind the next corner - but a seriously good adventure. If you have a little patience or you like long deep games you can take your time on, this is for you!

A brilliant from better days

Finished the game a couple of hours ago, but still thinking of it's story - such a deep and emotionally involving characters, cleverly written out dialogues and letters. You see the story evolving step by step, enriching with gruesome and bloody details. Puzzles are intelligently crafted, leaving quite a time to think about the possible solution. Cosmic and haunting soundtrack is bringing the atmosphere to the peak. An unforgettable experience.

Good atmosphere but obscure puzzles

Good game but not for me. I do like newer adventure games in that style (Like the Dracula or Dark Fall games) and games with good stories in general. I really liked the mood and music in Zork Nemesis. What i didn't like that much was that puzzles were often build like a huge machine (usually a temple or a castle) where you would have to fix parts until the whole thing worked again. It required you to explore everything and read many notes and books that I personally didn't care so much about. The story is okay but doesn't kept me interested that well. In the end I just didn't care enough about the story to arrange 12 musical instruments in the right order and play a tune on them. (first you have to find out the names, then find out where they have to go and then remember that order to play a song without seeing them). It just doesn't feel like fun to me, so I stopped playing. Maybe that is just the style of puzzles many Myst inspired games used? I don't know yet but will find out in my playthrough of Myst soon.

Confused Zork but still a fun adventure

I understand the disappointment fans must have felt at the time this game came out. The game still has all the traits of a Zork game (goofy names and all) but tries really hard to tell a completely serious story. A story that is often in contrast to the world of Zork. So this does come out very confusing when you hear goofy names, spells, and just outright goofy moments in this world full of grisly murders, conspiracy, and slightly Romeo and Juliet undertones. The story in this is ok. It's not the best Zork story (for which, my personal favorite is Inquisition), but it's still fun. It's very much trying to be like Myst for some reason. I don't know why, really. It clearly has a bigger budget, a more interesting world they already built upon previously (with Return to Zork- not to mention the text adventures previously to all the FMV). For whatever reason, though, in the FMV world Myst was what everyone wanted to be, since it was such a phenom at the time, so I guess they had to try. It's unfortunate that the storyu comes out so confused, but I think the game is still worth checkinhg out. I'd say the puzzles are much more complicated in this one, but still solvable if you explore everything. Zork was always good about that. I'd also say the game still holds up fairly well. Again for what it is. It is a disappointing Zork game, but as an FMV adventure game it's pretty good as one of those.
