Runs great on Steam Deck!

Running Heroic Games Launcher using GE-Proton9-15, the game runs a rock-solid 60FPS at low-medium settings. The game looks and plays great. Thank you GOG for day 1 game preservation!

Adol's adventures continue

Yet another entry in the long run series of Ys games from Falcom. As usual, there is no continuity from previous entry so new players can jump in this one without losing anything but few references or easter eggs from other adventures. Gameplay and graphics wise, should feel familiar for those who have already played Lacrimosa of Dana (VIII) or Monstrum Nox (IX) with few improvements and refinements in the gameplay mechanics. I like that Falcon continues to innovate and try new things with every new entry while not completely departing from what proves to work well with the players, be it general fighting mechanics, mini-games, story and character development, soundtrack vibes. Is it a contender for GOTY? Maybe not, but it is a lot of FUN and continues to bring back that magic and escapism we need in our busy lifes every now and then. Speaking of that, in terms of accessibility you have a wide range of options for difficulty (5) which should suit different players. On technical side, so far this plays perfect on Steamdeck with Proton 9.0, game being managed through Heroic launcher. This is another confirmation of the great work done by Durante and his team from PH3 in optimising this PC port. Co-op is technically possible but experimental, won't be able to test that one anytime soon. Is it worth the asking price? The base game I would definitely say so for an existing YS fan, if you are a new comer you may want to start with an older and cheaper title to get a similar taste of it, or just wait for a deep sale. Either way, I am happy this showed up on GOG on the same day like every other PC store and I wanted to support the developer for doing that by buying it on the release day. Nihon, please keep them coming! :D

One more step into Adol's adventures

Let me start with that, much like in the case of previous titles there are contents that is console exclusive. While none of those are gameplay changing people may like to see the extra clothes on PC too. Ys X can be considered as the middle ground between VIII and IX. The story while being that of a classic Ys it flow more like in Ys VIII with a lot more connection between the pieces and with a lot of cutscenes rather than the fast paced story telling of the old games or Ys IX. However it also throws you in a few large hubs with a lot to interact with rather than separating it to locations like it did in Ys IX. Honestly the game got a really nice story that I already played through two times and I'm planning to do it more. As I said it's classic: there is the enemy, yes sure there are also mystery here and there but it is a mystery because of the said enemy. Very straight forward and much comparable to the first set of Ys titles. The gameplay is much more simple than it was in the previous few games. A lot of new mechanics from Ys Seven, VIII and IX got completely removed and actually I'm glad for this. I felt that Ys IX forced a lot of pointless things in the gameplay just because Ys VIII had it. Ys X got two things for its general gameplay loop. Now you can continuously block and perform powerful counterattacks, and switch between the fast but weaker solo mode and slower but powerful duo mode. Counter attacks are way less abusable than flash guard and the duo mode is here when you have to break through enemies with force. As simple as this get and I like it. I hate to use this word but the game also feature a 'barebone' naval combat. Your ship autotarget the enemies so everything left is to position yourself. It is kind of fun for the likes of me who's not into the manual aiming at all. Ys IX left a bit of grief in me but this game fixed all of those. Simplicity done right. I dare to say it's my second favorite game after Ys 8, on par with Ys I & II.

solid PC version and DRM free

This is the first time i buy a game day one, and on GOG at that. Will continue with the next trails of since this is the same publisher. On a system with a ryzen 7 5700X, 32GB of RAM at 3600mhz and a radeon 6800 non xt, i get 120fps on global high settings with 4x AA and high quality shadow filtering. This is all at a 2560x1440 resolution. I'm no stranger to the YS series as i had previously purchased most of them on steam before. If you've never played an YS game do yourself a favor and buy one. I recommend YS VIII because it is a modern YS and arguably among the top 3 YS games ever made. YX X nordics is fun so far but i'm mitigated on the ship exploration right now.

A Great Evolution For the Series

Previous Ys titles were charming as hell, but always lacking in some respects. With this engine redesign, gameplay and looks are much more streamlined. Although the story isn't as great as IV, VI or Origin were, it does have a lot of heart. Questing is much more focused on the main story and subquests usually add a lot to the story and world design. This is the first title I bought full price where I didn't regret it. Great new engine! While Falcom still can't animate characters all that well and the game looks more like from the PS3, the new engine is still a huge visual step up from Ys VIII and IX. Of course, Ys fans don't come for the graphics, but rather for the charming art style and love that is poured into the character design. OST amazing as always! We get the fab Falcom world building, including people who manage to move you with their stories so deeply that you start doing pikkard fetch quests. Questing never overstays its welcome, never deters from the main plot. Characters behave organically and their dialogues evolve over time to reflect the changes you're responsible for. Gameplay is much more kinetic. Browsing through the world with the mana whip or using your magic snowboard seems like copying Spider-Man or Zelda at first, but is used in a unique way only an Ys game can provide: it's not about precision or skill, it's just frantic speed that lets you cut through boring dungeon sections easily. At first I missed a bigger party, but the tethered gameplay that just focuses on Adol and Karja is much more streamlined and made me care more about individual and duo skills as well as using shielding and evasion more than in previous titles. The ship combat and recapture sections are meh, but not forced onto you. Same goes for systems like skill trees or crafting. The setting sadly isn't as varied. Ys VIII took place on just 1 island, but still managed to look really versatile. Somehow, most places, dungeons and enemies here look rather samey.
