When redheaded thrill-seeker Adol Christin and his eternal blue-haired companion Dogi make an unannounced visit to Dogi's homeland of Felghana after an eight-year absence, it quickly becomes apparent that things have changed dramatically. Hordes of violent monsters roam the outskirts of town, a long-dormant volcano has suddenly sprung back to life and the new lord of the land has begun mercilessly and inexplicably extorting money from its long-suffering citizens. While Dogi seeks out his former combat master for answers, Adol tends to the townsfolk -- and finds himself embroiled in a world of political conspiracies, ancient legacies and unthinkable taboos.

Been playing this series since 1989. If you don't like this reincarnation of Ys III, you should probably just avoid the series altogether. Its got everything right on target. God this revamped music is amazing..
Ys The Oath In Felghana isn't a fun experience, it's an ordeal. You don't play this game to have fun, you play it to prove that you have skill. Every single boss in this game is designed to be as frustrating and annoying as possible. Expect a lot of cheap deaths from bosses who spam nigh unavoidable bullet hell attacks at you that you can handly avoid due to the lack of a dodge button and even when you get something close to a dodge later on in the game you usually end up spamming it madly all the time because you pretty much have to in order to avoid getting hit.
Oh and don't take getting hit lightly, there's no healing items in this game, not because the game was designed to be played without them since they were in Ark Of Napishtim, the developers just decided to remove them to alienate people who aren't masochists, so if you get hit too much in the first phase, you are better off suiciding since you will die, there's too much to avoid to not die. It's a matter of how much you can survive before you do die. So have fun trying to kill yourself so that the retry option shows up. Honestly in a game like this I would have like a suicide option so that I can just stab myself and retry immediately because the bosses are HP sponges and have phases that are so mind-numbingly boring that only exist to waste your time. For example, there's a dragon boss later on in the game that just sits there and bits the air in front of him, he doesn't do anything else until you wipe out 1000 or so hp. Only then does the boss actually start using moves.
This game loves to throw multiple phases at you to mess you up. The thing is, if you die, you have to sit through the earlier phases again and those phases are so tedious to get through.
Don't think the combat is worth the hassle though, you mash the attack button , run and jump, maybe spam a spell, thats it.
1 star for the music, not as good as pc engine version though 2 star for the masochists that will play this game.
The game is not bad. It is only the second Ys game I have played (after VIII). The soundtrck is great and the action combat system is fun. Some of the bosses are kind if annoying and minimal grinding is needed. The story was fine and overall it was an acceptable game. not great but not bad.
I've been an Ys fan ever since Ys Book I & II arrived in my home with a fresh new Turbo Duo in the 90's! I fell in love with the series on the spot and that love eventually led me to spearhead fan translation projects for these games. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of working with bad people such as Jeff Nussbaum and Thomas Lipschultz who would go on to be hired by XSEED Games and criminally cheat me!! This company has no problem cheating software developers and violating their IP Rights if it can save 'em a buck in the localization process...
See, Thomas brought his grudge for me to XSEED, used the company for vindictive revenge by orchestrating a double-cross in which my translation partner of 5 years, Jeff, would secretly hand off the translated script for Felghana that went into this game, first for PSP, and later Steam! Any way you look at it, legally, morally, ethically, this criminal man never should've exploited the fan translated results and simply should've went with hired pro translators like EVERY OTHER company will do! Instead, he led his company on a path of divisiveness, bigotry, discrimination, criminality, etc.!
Jeff Nussbaum profited from thousands of my fan work hours that were done for free in the script extraction phase of the translation process, as well as profiting from my 100% legal translation software which was all for fan purposes, and not for a commercial entity like XSEED Games which came along much later... So, he pocketed 100% of the credit, 100% of the payment, etc. for something he wasn't 100% responsible for with ALL of his OWN work hours/time! The translated scripts were ready-to-go because of a TEAM effort and every bit of work hour in step 1 and step 2 was necessary! He did this not once, but 4 times in the end with Ys I, II and Origin, and disappeared for 3 years, going into silence pretending as if he had never met me to escape scott-free from what he had done, this after 5 years of a partnership and knowing me for 8...
