Description
World-famous red-haired adventurer Adol Christin awakens in the unfamiliar land of Celceta, remembering nothing more than his own name. Bereft of his past, Adol explores the town he happened to wander into, searching for any clues at all to his identity. Joined by a thief who claims to have spent some time at his side these past weeks, the young adventurer helps rescue doomed miners from a collapse – an act which ingratiates him to the local Romun Army general. Impressed with their skills, the pair is enlisted to explore the Great Forest of Celceta and map its vast expanses – a task which many have attempted in the past, but from which none have ever returned alive.

Eager to unravel the mystery of his past and the cause of his predicament, Adol sets off with his new-old thief friend, Duren, to chart the untamed wilderness that claimed his memories. Along the way he meets numerous other individuals who seem to have encountered him before, and must carefully determine who among them can be trusted.

Developer Nihon Falcom originally revisited the land and characters of Japanese cult favorite Ys IV in 2012 with Ys: Memories of Celceta on the PlayStation Vita, and the game found its way to North America the following year. Now, this re-envisioning moves from the small screen to PC monitors, with a bevy of updates and enhancements to fully take advantage of its new platform.

Featuring a unique take on the party-based combat system that’s come to define modern Ys titles, as well as one of the largest and most varied overworlds in the series’ long and illustrious history, Ys: Memories of Celceta brings a greater sense of adventure to the Ys universe than ever before, with this PC iteration serving as the definitive version of one of the franchise’s most pivotal entries.
  • Fully Enjoy the Land of Celceta with a Host of PC Enhancements: This remaster comes with a wide range of HD resolutions, fixed framerates up to 120 fps with the option to unlock the framerate altogether, fully customizable control bindings, fully integrated mouse support, and more!
  • Explore One of the Most Expansive Locales in the Series’ History: The overworld of Celceta metes out battle and exploration in equal measure, accompanied by a robust mapping system with customizable waypoints and clear, detailed icons that aid the journey of Adol and company through this mysterious new land where enigmas and obstacles wait around every bend.
  • Experience a Crucial Cornerstone of Ys Lore: The events that occur over the course of Ys: Memories of Celceta’s lengthy campaign serve as some of the most important and far-reaching in the franchise, yet remain entirely self-contained so even series newcomers can fully enjoy the story.
  • Throw Down the Gauntlet in Time Attack and Boss Rush Modes: Fan-favorite Time Attack mode returns, complete with its ultimate Boss Rush challenge, pitting Adol alone against implacable foes or allowing for full-on party combat to keep the battle going well after the main story has been completed. GOG Galaxy leaderboards have been implemented as well, accessible and viewable even in-game to see how you stack up against other Celcetan boss-slayers around the world!

Average at first, but very good overall

Man I love the Ys series! When I buy one of those game, it becomes an obsession and I just can't put the controller down. I was a bit wary of Celceta because reading the reviews peoples were like "its not the best Ys" and stuff like that. Have to admit that the first 5-6 of hours the game is really average and the story is extremely underwhelming (your are tasking with the mapping of a huge area). But after that, things start to pick up and story, characters, etc. become way more interesting. Its an old game and graphics are average but still, they are not bad and they serve their purpose. BIG disappointment in regard to the music which is usually a highlight in YS games. There's basically just 1-2 good songs. And... there's WAY too many cutscenes! Also, game is too easy on normal mode. In my opinion the various levels are pretty interesting, there's lot of stuff to discover, weapons and armors to max out, etc. Fighting is really fun, fast paced and spectacular once you get a hang of Flash Move/Guard. Celceta is pretty much an improved version of Ys Seven and I really enjoyed it!

Thoroughly enjoyable

A thoroughly enjoyable game; though it's neither classic Ys nor a modern JRPG. I really enjoy it as what feels like a Dreamcast-era RPG but many folks might just feel it is too thin. Playing on Hard, the game is generally easy but your health can get sapped quickly even when backtracking to earlier areas. Rather than being a nice skill challenge, it's more a chore to maintain healing. The game is missing the satisfying progression of earlier games where each new area is very dangerous but yields a ton of experience, and every chest or checkpoint is a small achievement. Celceta instead has sprawling maps with the majority of chests having common (pointless) contents. Also of mention is the graphics - despite the graphics being like a Dreamcast/Vita game, it has a demanding rendering pipeline and on an older PC it took some tweaking of the settings to avoid the game running at 10FPS or less. This feels a little silly. It's nice to have options but some players will want to jump in with modest default settings. With all that said, I will reiterate that this is a thoroughly enjoyable game and if the store page screenshots look appealing then you are likely gonna have a great time here.

Another good Ys title

Played a fair chunk of it on PS Vita but never finished it. Finally got to play it again and completed the game this time around. The PC port is excellent in terms of options and performance. Gameplay is Okay. the Flash Guard/Move mechanics seems a bit all over the place. You get the guard but still takes huge chunks of damage or you move away and still take huge chunks of damage. The Party system and the various characters are a good part of this game. The characters play differnetly enough and you have to play around with their attack types to get the most out of it. Story is descent. And serves as a good motivator to play the game. Definitely something to get if you like Action RPG:s and the Ys series over all.

For now at least, hail to the new king.

While not the original game 4 in the franchise, this is a title that has taken everything the series has done and learned from it to create the best release I've played in the series yet. Ys II has officially been dethroned.
