This game is free on another platform right now. It's an absolute blast! Reminds me of the Ratchet and Clank days, or other similar platformers (I'm a huge R&C fan). My son adores it as well. We have so much fun playing together. I'm playing it on a high refresh rate monitor at 3440x1440 and the graphics are colorful and playful. I love it. I have no idea why it only has a 3.4 star rating. It may not be worth full price (though I would certainly pay it) to some, but that's no reason to give it a low rating.
The game is exactly what I hoped for. It feels like Banjo&Kazooie from the first second on.
Only 3 stars because you can't play this game (on windows) without an XBox controller and because Playtronic forgot to map a B-Button to the keyboard.
For all who don't have an xbox controller (like me) use an xbox controller emulator. Worked perfectly for me.
...if you have played Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie (the sequel). This game does exactly what backers asked for: Bring back this type of platformer/adventure game back to the market.
If you have played the N64 games 20 years ago and recall them being the perfect games, I recommend you play these games (XBOX, emulator) before buying this one. If you still love the two Banjo games, you will love this one.
The camera is a bit wonky (a little more than in the Banjo games) and there are some minor framerate drops, but the rest is simply amazing.
The common criticisms, like the HUB world being confusing, are mostly found in the Banjo games as well. Gruntilda's Lair (the HUB world in Banjo Kazooie) is way more confusing to navigate than Hivory Towers (the HUB in Yooka Laylee).
The minigames have controls that take time to get used to (like most minigames in Banjo Tooie), but they aren't necessarily bad. I can understand people getting frustrated with them, though.
Also, this game feels a lot more like Banjo Tooie than it feels like Banjo Kazooie. The worlds are bigger and more open. It's harder to find the main collectibles and the game feels more open-ended.
If you only played the first Banjo game, I recommend taking a look at Banjo Tooie and see if you like that game.
If you like both of the Banjo games, you will love this one.
Not sure why the rating is so low. Not the best 3D platformer ever made but still a solid one with plenty of fun times to offer. There is for sure an old school 3D platformer feel when playing this game. Very much like Banjo Kazooie or similar N64 titles. While this game has a more "indie" feel to it compared to Banjo Kazooie, I think that is forgivable since it really is made by an indie developer comprised of former Rare Software members.
I enjoyed this game till the end and might even replay it someday. If you're on the fence, I's say definetly worth a buy if on sale.
I was a massive fan of the Rare N64 Games and an even bigger fan of 3D Platforming games genre in general. Unfortunately for people like me who love the genre there are very few games that are made like this anymore which is why I was stoked to see someone make a platforming game with modern graphics and an old school formula. Yooka-Laylee looks great, controls are tight (with a controller, honestly why would you want to play this with a keyboard) and the music is amazing. The game is really fun to play and there is allot to do. I read allot of reviews on other game sites after I had finished the game that were complaining about things like how it is annoying that you have to collect things. It’s a platform game, you are supposed to collect things! I also read quite a bit about the camera being bad however I had no issues what so ever with the camera controls which for a platform game is a big accomplishment. I did read somewhere that there was a day one patch that fixed up allot of the camera issues so the issues that other review websites had before the game was actually officially released may have been fixed before us as normal players got to play the game so keep that in mind. They also added content like multiplayer mini games and the ability to have a second player co-op with collecting items and stuff. Content like this I didn’t really use but extra points to them for putting them because for a game like this you would have no expectation for it to even have it so I appreciate the effort. In the game some Pagies were hard to get as there was more to some of the abilities then I realised (such as being able to reflect light of the Camo ability) but talking about this with other players on forums was interesting and the game didn’t hand hold you though all the different ways you can use abilities which was actually good. Allot of times I would use abilities to get in places I didn’t think the game would allow me to go and thinking I am breaking the game only to find a secret collectable or a ghost writer which gave a real sense of having fun with the exploration. On the downside I did HATE the Rextro games as they went for way too long for a mini game and the fact I had to do each one twice was painful. Also the Kartos cannon not following the track and missing most of the barrels etc was also really annoying. I have 100% finished every part of this game and I hope it gets enough of a following so they make a sequel and hopefully we start to see allot more of these type of games being made again.
