An unusual error manifests on April 4th, a day that echoes the enigmatic code 404. In a desperate act of innocence, a child relinquishes her name for an invitation to a birthday party, her hope tethered to the faint possibility of finding her brother. Meanwhile, Alex, a recent college graduate, returns home, only to find his reality unspooling like a threadbare tapestry. Guided by a cat which slips through the very fabric of his mind, Alex descends into the depths of his consciousness where he witnesses the impossible: a woman, locked away in an iron maiden, vanishing into thin air. A vision which ignites an undying obsession and threatens to unravel the boundaries of his world.
Combat in YIIK I.V is an arcane dance, a turn-based system where players use everyday weapons against bizarre entities, aided by the power of Karta. When players or enemies take damage, they start to bleed, and every action taken while bleeding brings them closer to defeat. It’s a race against time to outlast the enemy and stem the flow of blood.
Navigate landscapes that blur the line between reality and dreams. These spaces are filled with intricate puzzles, deadly traps, and odd adversaries that challenge your perception, pushing the boundaries of what you know to be real.
The narrative shifts between the perspectives of Alex and the Nameless Child, drawing you into their separate yet intertwined realities, each twist revealing deeper layers of their destinies.
The game’s soundtrack features over 200 tracks across a wide range of genres, from drum and bass to progressive rock. Much of the music is performed by live musicians, adding a vibrant and authentic layer to the experience.
Only 2 genders to choose from what the hell is this? Clearly not a post-modern game as advertised. Wake up devs, it's 2019 for crying out loud! On a more serious note, this game kinda sucks. The story is terribly uninspired and the writing is a proof of society's cultural decline. Try before you buy.
(First review ever ...YAY!)
I purchased this on day one. I've been loving it ever since!
The artstyle is very charming –"Oniric" may well describe it–The NPC's dialogue is so EARTHBOUND-ish, the music so UNDERTALE-ish, the main character's relationship is so PERSONA-ish and the battle mechanics so many people argue about is, IMO, great (think of it as a sorta mix between PAPER-MARIO, UNDERTALE and SP: STICK OF TRUTH). The writing is also very PERSONA-ish.
As you may've read/heard already, the battle system involves minigames. If you've played BATEN KAITOS (1 and/or 2) you may feel the two battle systems feel SLOW to viewers ONLY. While played, though, you feel the tension of a quick response demanding mechanics –ergo, you dont feel the "slow-pace" at all!. Besides, there is always the FASTFORWARD (RT) if you want. If you "git gud at it", you can get through most battles unscattered!
I don't know why such a beautifull game so many brilliant ppl worked so hard on gets so little love. The loading screens sure are sort of a prob, but ...hey!, the game just came out!. It's only natural.
I'd say many ppl simply don't get the point. For instance, many regard Alex as the worst MC ever, failing to get what "character development" means –like Kurono in GANZ– and that he is a very representation of a privileged oversensitive young adult trying to overcome a late coming of age. Aside from that, the leveling is kinda misunderstood: When you banish a soul survivor, it appears at random in the mind dungeon, allowing you to gain bonus stat increase if you beat it once there! The entire stat-to-increase-selection interface could've been made smoother, true... but the game allows you to keep all characters at the same level and you level up when you feel like it (like BATEN KAITOS)
In one word: If you like any of the games previously mentioned, give it a shot.
PD: I dare say most people who hate the MC feel somewhat identified in it... Projection can be tough.
