Description
Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions.

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it!
  • Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology!
  • Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire...
  • Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork. It slowly reveals the intentions and origins of the invaders, while also unlocking new battlefield equipment, aircraft and vehicles for you to use as you harness alien technology and turn it against them.

Original UFO clone with a few bugs

This game is a clone of the original 1994 UFO: Enemy unknown (XCOM UFO Defense in north America). It is way better than the firaxis/2k games reboot or the previous attempts to cash in on the success of the two original games. It still has room for improvements, the management interface is sometimes lacking, manual air combat is a bit complex to my taste and there are a few bugs (crashed once, discovering after starting a ground mission that one soldier has a basic rifle instead of his role gear, map sometimes has a bunch of impenetrable black tiles,...) and I'm afraid these improvements may come in form a sequel instead of fixing the current game, hopefully not. That said, this game is really enjoyable, has community support and mod support and great replayability. It is worth saying that it runs well on integrated gpu.

My new fave game!

UFO:Enemy unknown used to be, but this has modernised and surpassed it. This is a game that has been well thought out, with the annoying bugbears of the old version (such as full alien mind control/Blaster Bombs/Proximity Grenades) removed. The developer has continually updated and improved it since its release, with V1.5 coming out soon (which includes lots of fixes and addresses a lot of the complaints discussed here such as Line of Sight issues). A great 1st game for Goldhawk, and their community support is 2nd-to-none. If you like turn-based tactical combat then this is for you.

so unbalanced..

enemies are way too powerful, they can see about x2 as far as your men, have incredible aim, cover hardly effects them and 9/10 they'll one hit you. Not worth the aneurysm this'll give you

Good concept, bad execution

Welcome to XCOM, with a font too small to read on smaller screens (and no option whatsoever to scale the HUD), bland graphics and boring sound design. I gave up after less than 2 hours of trying to play this and I don't intend to try again. If you want to relive the glory days of Enemy Unknown, Open Xcom is still MUCH better and more atmospheric experience. Or go for the brilliant Firaxis' remake if you don't mind some (mostly QOL improving) changes to the original formula. Sadly, this game has been outdated and boring even at its release date...

Your solders are pathetically weak.

All the X-Com style games have a reputation for being difficult but this one is an exercise in masochism. When your soldiers see an alien most of them won't fire no matter how good their reflex rating is, most of your soldiers that do shoot will miss no matter how good their aim is supposed to be, and most of your shots that do hit won't get kills. Your soldiers will routinely miss aliens standing in the open while the aliens will routinely hit your people even when they're supposedly protected by cover. And the aliens have a longer visual range, especially at night, so they can shoot and kill your soldiers while the aliens are too far away for you to see, let alone shoot back at. You are outnumbered on all but the easiest of missions and most missions end up with your people having to cram into small rooms and corridors full of aliens defending from cover and through doorways. This game has a weird system for handling terrain objects and if there's so much as a blade of grass between you and the target your shot will be partially blocked, which never seems to stop the aliens from hitting your own people. And don't even try to throw hand grenades because there is absolutely no guessing where they will land and they're as likely to bounce off of something and hit your own people as the enemy. The aliens can make psionic attacks, but unlike most X-Com games, Xenonauts does not allow you to research psionics or find defenses against them. Even your soldiers with the highest resistance rating will frequently be stunned for a turn or even shoot at their squadmates, and there is absolutely not a single thing you can do about it. Xenonauts feels like trying to lead your team of poodles to victory against a team of rotweilers.
