Description
Xenonauts is a strategy game in which you control a multi-national military organisation defending a Cold War-era Earth from alien invasion, using small squads of persistent soldiers to eliminate the extraterrestrials and recover their technology in turn-based ground combat. A detailed strategic layer allows you to co-ordinate the defence of the planet, using your interceptors to shoot down UFOs and researching captured artefacts to learn about your foes and unlock new combat equipment to use on your missions.

Xenonauts is a spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 1990s. We aim to improve the graphics, add new content and streamline the interface whilst still retaining all of the key mechanics of the original games. Devoted fans should love this game, but we're also keen to introduce the joys of old-school grand strategy to a whole new generation of players who might not otherwise experience it!
  • Ground Combat: Xenonauts delivers tense turn-based combat across realistic, varied and fully-destructible battlefields, against almost fifty different variants of enemy. Missions range from capturing crashed UFOs or alien bases to defending cities (or even Xenonaut facilities) against alien attack. You'll experience the chill of encountering a new alien for the first time and the joys of test-firing a new weapon for the first time. Deeply asymmetric combat keeps the battles interesting - after all, you're fighting intergalactic invaders with 1970's ballistic technology!
  • Persistent Soldiers: Soldiers in Xenonauts are persistent from mission to mission, improving their stats and gaining ranks with combat experience - but their deaths are always only a single bad move away. You will grow to care about the brave men and women under your command as they slowly grow from green rookies into hardened veterans, but that only makes it more painful when their heroic tale is cruelly cut short by a burst of plasma fire...
  • Research Tree: Xenonauts has an extensive research tree with almost a hundred projects to unlock, each with its own unique description and painted artwork. It slowly reveals the intentions and origins of the invaders, while also unlocking new battlefield equipment, aircraft and vehicles for you to use as you harness alien technology and turn it against them.

Closest XCOM remake so far

In short, closes old school XCOM reboot you can get at the moment, with some potential (there is a an "official" community edition). Notable mention is "XCOM: Enemy Unknown" by "2k games", it's a big budget game, which is miles ahead in visuals, but lacks the simulator feel of the original XCOM. Pros: much better air combat, which, if you are bored, can be "auto resolved" with a click of a button, on top of being able to control aircraft, you can group them into squadrons of up to 3 community version is pushing a bunch of features missing in the official release (they are even supposed to become part of the official release as of 10th of Dec 2014) Local police/military also fight aliens (don't recall that from the original XCOMs, have played only the first 2 though) Alien weapons are usable upfront, although with heavy aiming penalty ("uncomfortable to hold", makes sense) Cons: Crushed UFO is graphics, you can't break into its hull, the only way is the entrance. Viewing angle is fixed. Because of it, you always know, that UFO is somewhere on the left. Overly simplistic UI is a step back even compared to the XCOM from 90th. I haven't finished it yet, but alien bases that I've got so far were much smaller than in original UFO and I cannot find good reason for that. UI is pretty dumb at times, you can position your squad at the entrance, open the door, shoot shoot shoot, close the door => nobody will come out to retaliate. Simplified inventory (can't put a grenade on your shoulder etc) Can't throw the weapons/aliens around, interrogate aliens at will.

It's hard... I love it!

My unorganized thoughts on the game: I haven't played the previous X-Coms/UFO games, but I am a friend of turn-based games like Jagged Alliance 2 and Silent Storm. I bought this game and after a short try I let it rest on the hard drive for over a year. One day, during a time of unemployment, I gave the game another shot and fell in love with it. I just loved how hard it is to figure things out yourself. I think it was on my 6th or 7th try starting the game over (after being completely overrun time and time again), that I finally completed the game. And even then, it wasn't the best possible outcome, but a good one nonetheless. The atmosphere in this game is awesome. The music adds to the eerie feeling of something really strange and unusual happening. Encountering new types of aliens for the first time is quite a frightening experience: "Are my primitive boomsticks even going to make a dent on this one?". It was truly a rewarding experience finally finding a sufficient plan and balance for technology, research, bases etc. to complete the game. I've no complaints about the graphics, they represent things and people well enough. Places and settings vary enough to keep things interesting. I've also tried the new X-Com games, and was somewhat disappointed with them. I am waiting for Xenonauts 2 though. If you like a challenge, buy this one. I should add: I played the community edition version of the game. It was bundled with the GOG download.

A disappointing remake of a classic

The good: - You can build more bases and need to pay for both scientists and engineers; the strategic component is therefore stronger than the X-Com reboot and closer to the original UFO. - You can break more alien bases. - Soldiers can jump over small walls. Yea, I know, sounds crazy. - Good ambient music. The Bad - Lazy graphic. Not expecting Firaxis use of 3D engines but, cmon, not even a progression bar on researches? Feels like a spreadsheet. Male and female models looks all the same and there is no room for customization, makes it harder to recognize the units. - Bad use of sound effects. No sound clue on alien positions, no sound clue on alien types on the map. X-Com Apocalypse had those already and it was 20 years ago. - Soldiers are deaf and blind: they enter a room, they won't see aliens standing on your side. they won't hear approaching steps in the nearby room. Did our specie lose hearing and peripheral vision all of the sudden? - No psionics. Can't even understand why, it was the coolest thing of the original games. Such a letdown. In the end, it's not a bad game. But is there any reason to play Xenonauts rather than the classic serie? Because if the only one is "it fits modern-day resolutions better" then I fear it's missing something.

Close but not there yet

This is relatively faithful remake of the original Xcom. It improves on the original in some aspects, for example. in aerial combat you can now order fighters around RTS style. However,IMO it is also lacking in other aspects, for example, the scanner from Xcom, which would be very useful during night missions, is missing. The user interface is also missing some controls, such as fly up/down. Maps are not randomly generated and with less than 10 mission maps, it gets boring after a while.
