The war continues... X-COM: UFO Defense brought you to a galactic battlefield. X-COM: Terror from the Deep brings the alien terror into a totally new dimension.
Seeking to take advantage of a weakened Earth, X-COM's deep space foes unexpectedly change strategy and launch a powerful second front against planet Earth.
In the dark depths of vast oceans, long sleeping forces are awakened by reanimation signals sent out across the galactic silence by their interstellar brothers and sisters. Slowly but surely, an army of hibernating alien sea creatures awakens. Your combat now extends to the strange new worlds of the deep where superior alien technologies threaten the very survival of this planet - your planet - Earth.
Sequel to the hugely successful X-COM: UFO Defense
Actual undersea geoscape mapping system with rich topographic detail
Full array of undersea military technology
Rich graphics feature water coloration and wrecks
Multilevel tactical maps featuring both underseascapes and buildings
Alien encyclopedia features mutation technology and new watery denizens
X-COM TFTD is great game, but GOG version is not properly patched to v2.1 despite its description. Thus you can't research magnetic navigation without Lobster Navigator. Also there is not possible to research Sonic Oscillator. This is reason why my review is so low. With proper patch this deserve 5 stars.
First Mission. Lost 4 of my 8 teammates.
Second Mission. Lost another 4 of my teammates.
Third Mission. Lost only one guy who forget to throw activated grenade.
Best game ever.
Im playing on the easiest difficulty :D
If you already played UFO: Enemy Unknown (X-Com: Ufo Defense) you may wonder what is the difference between this and TFTD. Well, there are three main things.
First - in UFO:EU you fight with aliens. It's a typical men vs spacemen comic book. In TFTD it's basically X-Com v.s. Cthulhu.
Second one - TFTD is designed to be much more atmospheric, with creepy looking arts and 1950s-style horror music.
Third thing - TFTD is extremely buggy to the level you can "break" your entire playthrough just by making research in wrong order, or experience your soldiers losing all gear in mid-fight.
I would recommend playing the original instead. The endgame is hard as hell for the worst reasons. Screw up a few missions and ypur rep will drop so low you won't have enough funding to carry on. Fail to capture specific aliens and technologies and you won't be able to construct the ship that can take you to the final boss. On top of that, research bugs might make it impossible to reach the end of the game at all. There was a tool for patching the research bug when it occurs, but the site where it was hosted seems to be net dead(correct me if I am wrong.).
And you seriously need to keep recruiting new blood to find high mental abilities on your soldiers lategame OR ELSE you will get totally wiped out by your own brainwashed/berserked troopers. But I guess the same is true for the original X-COM.
Oh, and the game physics don't behave like it's underwater at all.
The second installment of X:COM series is, basically, X:Com Enemy Unknown with game-breaking design flaws straightened out for much better replay value. The one real problem of the original X-Com was that a player who already knew the research three could jump to endgame technology in just few months, then turn the tactical part into point and click slaughter, delivered by mind controlling soldiers in flying suits, armed with automatic heavy plasmas of doom and guided blaster missiles. TftD goes to great lengths to re-balance the game and keep it challenging until end stage; more complicated research tree stops player from getting endgame tech and mind control early on, surface missions stop some game-breaking equipment from working and the most powerful guns are semi automatic option. Along with more challenging aliens it forces player to stick to squad level tactics (with emphasis on concentration of fire and mutual support) to the very end, rather than coordinating invincible exterminators. If you start X-Com series with this one rather than Enemy Unknown, the original game will always feel simplistic .
The changes to the story, artwork style and atmosphere - which was very generic in original - may be a welcome change, too, depending on your tastes.
