The game shouldn't been released in the sorry state as it was. But now with 4.0 I feel I can really enjoy it. No issues, runs on Ultra with 4x FSAA on my GTX980m. The controls feel much better than the last time I tried the game. Yes, you can fly only one ship, but at least the game doesn't feels unpolished and unusable. What I still don't like is the walking around on stations part. The models are still ugly and the minigames mostly annoy me.
With the latest patch (4.3), and few mods, X Rebirth is finally a worthy member of the X family. The are still some unpatched bugs (like Titurel's engines), but most of them are covered by mods. Compared to previous X iterations, you are limited to piloting only one craft (an M3+ Eclipse to be exact), but fortunately it's highly customizable. You can change you craft to nimble fighter, durable corvette or something in between. You can even change the cockpit, a substitute to piloting different crafts ;). You can even attach mods to weapons to alter theirs performance. Unfortunately you can't pilot capital ships, but you can land on them and how the big boys do battle (capital ship bridge mods is very nice in such situations). Capital ships in X:R are also much better then in previous games. With wide array of weapons (not limited by arch speed of slowest weapon in turret) they are deadly to both fighters and other capital ships. Huge stations with many landing pods will take a while to get used to, but the game is worth it.
X Rebirth was launched hoping to bring something new to the series, but it crashed brutally. It's not a real X game that we've all been playing all these years, with every product that Egosoft has released. The worst, when it came out for sale, brought many bugs, if we add that it is not an X game, like the previous ones, then we have a very negative opinion.
Well, we have to admit that Egosoft has been fixing it over the years, they have released new content that gives the game more than it already had when it was released. X Rebirth is one of the first games in the saga, which is graphically beautiful, both in graphics, as in its ships, the environment, the particles, etc... .
Its gameplay is complicated and especially when it comes to winning Cr, the combats between ships are spectacular, they last longer, you can destroy the modules that the ships bring to immobilize them or leave them without weapons and of course, we have a curious way to when boarding ships.
What I like the most about Egosoft is that they have listened to the entire community, they have decided to listen to us and give us a true X game for the next installment, the long-awaited X4 Foundations, I hope that when it comes out, I will put my hands on it and after playing it make it a criticism.
X Rebirth being a complicated game, the support for Mods is appreciated, you can play it and have fun thanks to those modders who create mods and turn X Rebirth into another different game.
This one missed the mark. I've always been a big fan of the X series. I've owned them all since X-BTF. I've logged many hundreds, probably more like thousands, of hours in X cockpits. Although I see where they are trying to go with this game, it doesn't get there.
On the plus side, the controls are smooth and accurate. It's really easy to fly and fight in this game. The weapon selection is limited, but they're good. The graphics are pretty amazing, which is expected with any X game. The universe is huge and there is a staggering variety of ships. Sadly. that's pretty much where it ends.
On the down side, and the most fatal flaw IMHO, is that you can only pilot one ship. Other X games let you fly any ship in your fleet. Half the fun was buying/building/capturing other ships and taking them for a spin.
Although being able to walk around in stations is an interesting idea, and one that was clamored for by X fans, it really turned out to be pretty boring. There are only a very few types of stations. Once you've seen them all it gets repetitive. That happens quick.
The interface is awful. It's just plain confusing. A complex interface doesn't have to be confusing. This makes the next problem all the worse.
It has the learning curve of a brick wall. This game is complicated and non-intuitive. Other X games had to be "figured out" to some extent, but this one ratchets that up 2 or 3 more levels. Even the simplest actions can be downright frustrating. The documentation, if you can call it that, is way out of date. Your best bet is tips from other players on the forums or YouTube.
I've read several reviews talking about how much better the game is now than it used to be. If this is good, I shudder to think how bad it used to be. I'm hearing rumors of an X4 in the works. I think I'll put my joystick and throttle back in storage until that comes out. I'm not wasting anymore time with this one.
Played a couple of hours so far and im not liking it. This game from what im told was designed from the ground up to be ported to the Xbox 360, meaning wonky controls and a UI desgined for 720p that CANNOT be altered, so get your reading glasses out. The UI in general is an absolute mess and not intuitive. Also graphical bugs everywhere from textures failing to load to deplorable lighting mechanics.
Putting graphics aside, the gameplay is a mess. I thought leaving the captains chair to walk the stations would be fun, but it's not as every station is exactly the same. It got old within 30 min. The game tries to teach you, but it's really only giving you a quick tour without any explanation of what or why you're doing any of it. Trading is dumb as you're required to scan the station first? Why?? I don't see how scanning the station lands me the best price, and it's not even fun. None of it is any fun!!! Also worth noteing, icons and numbers everwhere that give no indication of what it is unless you get close and interact with it until you memorize it all.
waste of money and time.
