While less carefree than simulation titles like Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley, the casual pacing and nonchalant nature of the main character make Wytchwood a great pick for relaxing exploration-style games. It is also a great choice for those who enjoy crafting and survival games, but prefer to have questlines to follow instead of self-governed gameplay. While the 2D art style is fun and reminiscent of storybook illustrations, this game is likely not the best pick for younger players due to questlines dealing with horror elements, as well as graphic depictions of animal death when using traps and lures. However, fans of twisted fairytales and creepy magical plotlines will likely find Wytchwood an enjoyable and spine-tingling experience.

Wytchwood isn’t a bad game because it’s easier than Dark Souls. Difficulty is not the only reason to play a game. But Wytchwood does let the player down with such a vague and uninteresting story. A game needs a hook, and this story ain’t it. Crafting games make me uniquely aware of how much time I am wasting by playing them. But in the end, I like to look back at the little work of art I made by building a house, or a city, or a space station. In Wytchwood I am just collecting ingredients because the game told me to collect those ingredients. It’s an attractive enough game, but it needs something else substantial.

9/10

If you want to step in the world of fairy tale, gothic fable whilst throwing in crafting spells and a linear simplistic story set within an explorable world, Wytchwood is for you. Beautiful visuals and an alluring soundtrack. This game could be seen as mundane and repetitive, with little combat or puzzle, however Wytchwood casts a spell on the player that will have you immersed into the art of enchantment for hours.

A right little gem!

What an incrediblely serene, beautiful and relaxing little game this is. When you're in a bad place and are yearning to go back to your younger years and need some comfort and solace from the world around you...this game is here for you. It is so utterly relaxing and has so much charm. It's a crafting semi-open world game whereby you solve problems and complete quests by crafting items and collecting things. If the game wasn't so beautiful and charming it wouldn't of held my attention for so long but it did do. The story is mainly told through storybook type cutscenes with no voice acting (but like reading a book it only serves to keep your imagination going) but has a certain charm nonetheless. + Incredibly beautiful artstyle + Serene and relaxing soundtrack + Fluid and tight controls + Attention to detail + Oozing with charm - When you customize you controls the icons on screen don't change - Objectives are hard to read - The odd stutter here and there - The game is very blurry when post-processing is turned on I have a young daughter and this game has given us so much joy and happiness, we are both laughing and having so much fun, I haven't laughed this much for quite a long time. And even though there are bad things in the world, and life seems to kick you when you're down. There is a lot of goodness. And it is worth fighting for. Please don't let them bad things drag you down with them, because you only live once and time is incredibly precious it's the one of very few things in the world that money can't buy. And they say videogames are bad for you.

Cozy and beautiful but unrewarding

Video review: https://youtu.be/348FBxrRS3M -------------------- * Very casual * Stunning art style * Well-written fairy tale stories * Collect resources and craft potions, traps and spells * The crafting chains are lengthy (collect 2 items for A, but you also need to craft B out of XYZ for which you need…) * Gathering and crafting gets grindy over time and isn’t rewarding * No combat, no challenging puzzles, no gameplay progress * Everything is spelled out for you

it's charming but...

once again, the "role-playing" description on gog is bewildering. there is no role-playing here. there is one way to solve problems, through recipes that are handed to you (though sometimes how to get them is a bit opaque), and while you get multiple tasks and can do them in the order you want in a fairly open world, that's as much lee-way as you get. nothing inherently wrong with that, and it's a fine, relaxing, simple game, as others have already described, but i continue to be befuddled by what counts here as role-playing. surely role-playing involves 1. choosing characteristics 2. multiple ways to solve problems 3. making choices that have an impact on the story, or 4. all of the above? none of these are present for this game, which again, wouldn't be a problem if it weren't described as an rpg.

Like an old fable

This is a beautiful and very chill game that feels like reading through a collection of old cautionary tales, something like a cross between Grimms' Fairy Tales and Aesop's Fables. It struck a rare chord for me, with overlap of many things I look for in games. If you want a relaxing atmosphere with a bittersweet story and seemingly-cute-yet-dark themes, then Wytchwood is for you. As others have already mentioned, the game hinges on ingredient collection, recipe crafting, and fetch quests. In short, "go to the place, to get the thing, then the other place to get the other thing, to make the final thing." It's not for everyone, but if you can lean into the slow pace and immerse yourself in the world, you'll likely find the style of gameplay enjoyable enough. Took me about 16 hours to complete. However, some of that was me zoning out to the lovely music, or otherwise taking my time and wandering around inefficiently. Efficiency is definitely not the goal of this game though, haha!

Beautiful but repetitive

This game is a fun take on the fairy tale genre. It's super casual and impossible to fail and is a semi open world adventure that primarily consists of extensive fetch quests and complex gathering and crafting with very minor combat mechanics. Overall I enjoyed it. The game mechanics were a little bit tedious towards the end but me wanting to find out the story pulled me through. The game had some nice twists and variations on familiar fairy tale genres. The art style was incredibly beautiful, the length felt solid and didn't overstay its welcome. I liked the music and sound effects. It had no voice acting and a lot of reading which I didn't mind. If you're looking for a relaxing, casual game experience that has a lot of charm and soul, this is the game for you.
