Description
The Old Gods are reawakening, clawing their way back into a world that’s spiraling into madness. In hospitals, abandoned classrooms, quiet apartments, and dark forests, strange appearances and unexplainable phenomena test the sanity of residents in Shiokawa, Japan. Is it chaotic retribution, or the machinations of beings beyond our comprehension?

This is WORLD OF HORROR: The end of the world is nigh, and the only solution is to confront the terror reigning over the apocalypse. Navigate this hellish, roguelite reality through turn-based combat and unforgiving choices in this roguelite-style cosmic horror RPG.

Invoke dark rituals, uncover disturbing clues, and solve puzzles across multiple randomized mysteries. Each perplexing case unravels into a series of random encounters with nightmarish figures inspired by the works of horror legends Junji Ito and H.P. Lovecraft.

  • Unveil the fates of 14 unique playable characters, and choose your path through a pool of 20 dreadful investigations.
  • Most mysteries harbor multiple endings - for those that survive long enough.
  • A haunting chiptune soundtrack accentuates the game’s stark 1-bit art style, drawn 100% in MS Paint.

Rogue-Like Horror Adventure RPG

That's a mouthful of a title, but World of Horror fits the bill. With a heavy emphasis on single-run playthroughs this game is meant to take about an hour of your time to tell you a unique horror story with absolutely tons of original events. With art inspired by Junji Ito and thematic elements taken from HP Lovecraft, you have a truly unique looking and feeling game. You will not feel "settled" while you play, even the music uses binaural frequencies to elicit unsettling feelings, and absolutely nothing in the game wants to help you. This means almost every character interaction is more about how little you get screwed over, rather than 'if' you do. Sure, if you stack a certain trait you may get passed one or two unscathed, but the reality is you are not supposed to beat the game easily. You are meant to suffer and fail. Over and over again. And this is where the Rogue-Like comes in, each time the events are randomly chosen, and if you die, that's it. Game over. Saving is almost not an option as you have to choose between sacrificing all of your skills or possibly also items in order to load the save back up. Truly a twisted option, but with games lasting the 1-hour mark you should be safe as long as you know you aren't going to be interrupted; otherwise treat it like it is 1984 for real (the year the game is based) and leave the window running. It is a small game and switching between the graphics options, including windowed modes, didn't seem to impact the title at all. The Adventure elements come from your ability to choose your investigations, hold a limited amount of items which may or may not interact with environmental or story factors, and it is all controlled through point and click input. The RPG elements come from the health and skill points, as well as magic and talents. Combat is turn based, and you select options which each have a "cast time" to fill an active battle gauge. Once it is full of commands you activate and your turn is over. Really great!

This is a good electronic game

Lots of potential in this early access. The artwork is great and legitimately creepy, the mysteries are great, the timeline system feels like it can add to so much to the mysteries and their outcome. The gameplay works really well with the presentation. The soundtrack fits to the 1bit/2bit visuals but it can feel a bit too arcadey for something with unnerving vibes like these. All I want is more mysteries, more events, more anything really.

Fantastic roguelike experience

Firstly, thank you dev for putting this game on GOG. Literally the only thing this game needs is a little more development, but the experience is already addicting and fun. This is a must-buy for roguelike fans.

Junji Ito inspired old school RPG

The game is a great roguelike old school RPG that always has you coming back to play it again, even if you die horribly. I cannot express in words truely how fun, creative and genuinely enjoyabe this game is other than saying I bought 2 copies of the game. One on GoG and one on Steam and have showed it to all my friends. If you like visually alluring games, old school RPGs, horror, the works of Junji Ito or just want to support a dev who legit deserves your cash unlike some AAA companies then please pick this game up. Hell pick it up on steam and try it out just to give it a go and see if you like it before you pick it up on GoG if you must but you should at least give the game a go.

A very unique game

I don't think I've ever played anything quite like world of horror, and I have to say I've really enjoyed it. It feels in a similar vein to games like Darkest Dungeon, where it's not so much about avoiding things going wrong (they will), but in trying to mitigate the damage. It has a lot of replay value, and I find the atmosphere it creates to be very good. It feels a bit like playing an adventure board game, like Arkham Horror, but in digital form. You go through a series of random events, often ones which go badly, and try your best to stay alive til the end as anything and everything slowly wears down your health, sanity, or speeds the apocalyptic awakening of an old god. I'm leaving off a star for two reasons: 1. The game is very dense and confusing when you first start, and has quite a learning curve for what is honestly a fairly simple game at its core. I know the goal was to imitate old game UI, but I think the complexity of it does the game a disservice, and it could be significantly streamlined in any number of ways to make for a more enjoyable experience. 2. The atmosphere is really amazing in this game, but I find that the way the stories unfold often doesn't quite live up to the atmosphere they're creating. They can feel very disjointed, and while the gameplay is fun, it often feels like you are doing random events until the story is ready to be ended. There's no obvious way to influence the story you're part of, really. There are a few exceptions to this, with some of the mysteries you undertake having a really different structure where you go to a different place and have totally different options for exploration. I think these are the best, though they have the downside of being less replayable in some ways. The festival mystery strikes a really good balance between the two styles I think, for example.
