World of Goo 2 is a fantastic sequel to a stone-cold classic. The new focus on liquids feels right at home, and the utterly bizarre fourth chapter elevates the experience to one of considerable excellence. It's a shame that it's somewhat let down by limited control options, occasionally wobbly performance, and some underutilised mechanics, but its core is so solid, we can't help but recommend it regardless.

World of Goo 2 is exactly as it presents itself. It’s a lot more World of Goo, with more levels, gameplay mechanics, fancier visuals, and a new/continued storyline. As cute (in a sinister way) as its style looks, this is as hardcore as physics-based puzzlers can get. The game does not hold your hand, often has really tight margins of error, and only offers the bare minimum of guidance when it feels like it. That said, there’s a surprising amount of variety, and you’re allowed to skip levels without being penalized. Even if you struggle, there’s a lot of cool, smart design and an interesting world to experience. For fans of the first game, of course, World of Goo 2 is a no-brainer.

Cuter than it sounds

Like the original from 2008, World of Goo 2 is a physics-based puzzle game reminiscent of Lemmings in so far as there are a number of creatures (goo balls in this case) that you don't have direct control over, which you have to guide towards the level's exit without them being burnt, minced, or otherwise meeting their demise. You do this by sticking goo balls together to form structures, which the remaining goo balls will crawl across. The physics of the structures is realistic enough that if you understand why the Eiffel Tower works in real life then you'll probably be able to solve the puzzles. If you don't, then this game will teach you! While the gameplay itself is good fun, it's really only half the reason to play. The other half is the strange and beautiful, if slightly sticky world, and captivatingly mysterious story. It's impressive how something as simple as little black balls with eyes can be made to feel so alive.

OK at best, not good

Too many irritating mechanisms/mechanics. Way more than the first game. Like levels in the dark you can't see where you're going, or forced time limits, etc. There are also frequent "this level is hard, skip it!" stages. And they're not kidding. Then each level has optimization bonuses (which don't matter, except they are in your face) that are "minimum number of moves" and, worse, "do it this fast". Maybe my memory (that did complete World of Goo back when) is rose-colored glasses that experience, or I'm just older now and can't tolerate BS unfun stuff anymore... But I didn't really feel any joy with attempting this sequel; certainly not like the charm I remember the first one having.

In terms of gameplay and visuals World of Goo 2 feels more like dlc than proper sequel. However why radically change something that was so good in the first place?
