The Soviet Assault expansion features 6 new single missions, a bevy of new weapons, and even more explosive World War III action.
Golden oldie, if your processor has a LOT of cores. you will need to patch it and also wic.exe file needs to be patched with largeaddress 4gb else the game will give an out of memory error.
GoG needs to do this....
Technical note: solve launching failures and crashes by manually installing DirectX (free from Microsoft) and right-clicking the WIC executable to apply compatibility settings. Runs great on Win10, Intel HD, high res.
IS THIS GAME FOR YOU? If you want to be a general commanding his army, NO. If you want to be a soldier taking aim and pulling the trigger, NO.
Here you are a lieutenant supporting his commanding officer by doing his part in a far larger battle. You might start by being ordered to defend an area, then run to the rescue of harassed units, then create a diversionary attack to open the enemy's flank. Since you aren't too busy, you get optional objectives too.
Think a RTS squad game where your squad is composed of mechanical and infantry units and you are surrounded by 15+ other squads with different degrees of interest in killing or helping you. And you can level buildings.
I love it because unlike other games you can feel like just part of a larger battle. This lets the game surprise you with new orders that make you go from set piece to set piece across the map.
Yes, it's scripted, but how you go about it it's completely up to you. You choose which units you will buy using a fixed pool of points, getting them as airdropped reinforcements. As they die, you can ask for more. From sniper to tank, there's lots of variety. Infantry is weak, but once they ocuppy a building they can deal and take some serious damage. Most units have manually activated special moves that recharge -smoke cloud, sprint, TOW missile. You also get to call air strikes -from artillery to tactical nukes.
It has a tutorial and simple controls, but skim the manual. Yes, they do sometimes throw a whole army at you but even temporarily losing all your units is not an automatic loss. If after changing tactics you just can't beat a mission, lower the difficulty and have fun anyway. Right-clicking on icons helps with unit selection. Not perfect but close enough. Recommended.
I was really glad I could find this on here. This was one of those games that you remember playing because you borrowed it from a friend, but lost the disk and never got to play it again and it just sits in the back of your mind for 10+ years. I'm glad it's about as good as I remember. It's too bad the multiplayer isn't up anymore, but that's not the game's fault. The story is not bad either for an RTS game from 2007. It's a pretty standard warstory that goes over-the-top and the premise makes little to no sense, but it has a few good moments of character developement that feel genuine from time to time and gives a good excuse to blow up commies. It's not George RR Martin, but for a strategy game from over ten years ago, it's servicable.
This was the first time I played through the Soviet Assault campaign, and that story had much more going for it than the base game. Missions are varied and are a good teaching tool for how to use units. At times you'll be sneaking through woods with airborne units behind enemy lines, other times you'll assault through those lines with a massive tank assault supported by artillery. It's a well paced campaign that keeps you interested.
My only complaints are quality of life features that have spoiled me from recent strategy games. It can be difficult to keep track of your units running around the huge maps you'll be fighting in and some way to zip to selected units wouldn't have gone unnoticed.
You will have a hard time getting this game to run on Windows 10, but there's plenty of patches out there. Once I found the right one, I didn't get a single crash for the rest of my playtime and havn't had one since. If I got it to work, you will too. Just keep Googling.
Overall fun to look at, fun to play, if a bit repetive at times and a story that is above average for it's genre and time.
Its a little different from your typical starcraft/warcraft.
You really need to regroup your limited units and take every advtantage each particular unit brings.
Also Artillary support is just da best
for less than 3 dollars, surely a 5-star game, but stars deducted for having to disable hyper threading from bios in order to get it working...
