With the expansion you can go on the attack as you take control of the Soviet army in an attempt to paint the free world red. Award-winning original plus epic expansion – this complete edition will immerse you in an all-out battle for the heart of the free world.
Chillingly plausible single-player campaign with frontlines based on real-life towns, suburbs and cities in America, Europe and the USSR.
Attain full command of four different roles – Air, Armor, Infantry & Support – in the ultimate team-based multiplayer experience.
Level an entire battlefield with powerful artillery barrages, scorching napalm strikes, and devastating tactical nukes.
The Soviet Assault expansion features 6 new single missions, a bevy of new weapons, and even more explosive World War III action.
I absolutely loved this game, when first released. I was delighted that GOG was still listing it, and with the follow-on Soviet Assault to boot!
When installed, the game loads as Soviet Asault for me. There is no sign of the original game. Also, when closing the game down, its process locks up, I can't even shut it down through the task manager, I need to restart my PC.
Very disappointing. This could be a quirk that only impacts me because of some edge case, but be warned if you're after the orginal game.
Used to own this as a kid, played it several times. Got GOG just to get David Martinez's jacked in CP and this game. What GOG doesn't tell you is that the game is still outdated and won't launch if you have anything newer than Windows Vista. Kudos to you GOG for selling things that don't work and kudos to the lazy developers who didn't even think about updating the game to be compatible with newer systems. This is the first time i would like to have my money refunded after a purchase but since GOG isn't Steam or Epic i think i can kiss my money goodbye.
This isn't an RTS as marketed, but frankly it isn't much of an RTT either. There's simply no dept or skill required making the game little more than a visual experience. The game feels like what would happen if you take the average Call of duty campaign - scripted, linear and full of explosions - and turn it into a top-down gameplay experience. The result is lackluster in content, repetitive and ultimately boring.
There's no base building, no economy and no tech tree, no controlling massive armies, just 10-15 units max and no in-depth micro tactics. There's next to no strategical or tactical gameplay on the macro- or micro-level in this game.
You get units by spending points from a points-pool, if said units die, their point-cost slowly trickles back into your points-pool. Unless there's a timed objective it's impossible to lose. There's no point in making anything but heavy armor, some repair and anti-air vehicles. This combination will suffice in almost any situation and your tanks can take on a near infinite number of enemy vehicles as it would seem the enemies' vehicles are made of paper. However, going in at half strenght usually means a failed attack so you very often sit around doing nothing but waiting for reinforcements.
Gameplay consists entirely of capturing points, reinforcing them simply by holding them for a short while (which auto-builds 1 AT turret, 1 AA turret and 1 MG nest, you can't even choose which ones you want to build) and then defending them against waves of enemies.
Then there's the airstrikes. They're cool to look at but you do them so often, dozens of times each scenario the wow-factor wears off fast. You don't have to do anything for them either, you get them automatically by waiting around.
The good? Graphics are dated but still hold up fine now. The narrative has a decent presentation though mediocre story and the overall game is polished for what little content it has.
Conclusion: Only for RTS/RTT supercasuals.
