Description
Wolfenstein®: The Old Blood is a standalone prequel to the critically acclaimed first-person action-adventure shooter, Wolfenstein®: The New Order. The adventure, which spans eight chapters and two interconnected stories, features the hallmarks of MachineGames – thrilling action, immersive story and intense first-person combat. As war hero B.J. Blazkowicz, arm yourself with new weapons such as the bolt-action rifle and grenade-launching Kampfpistole as you attempt to thwart the advancing Nazi war machine, and take advantage of duel-wielding pipes that can be used for wall climbing – or for vicious take-downs of never-before-seen Nazi adversaries.

STORY

The year is 1946 and the Nazis are on the brink of winning World War II. In an effort to turn the tide in the allies’ favor, B.J. Blazkowicz must embark on an epic, two-part mission deep within Bavaria….

Part one of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves - pits BJ Blazkowicz against a maniacal prison warden as he breaks into Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to steal the coordinates to General Deathshead’s compound. In part two – The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs – our hero's search for the coordinates leads him to the city of Wulfburg where an obsessed Nazi archaeologist is exhuming mysterious artifacts that threaten to unleash a dark and ancient power.

The Boring Adventures of BJ Blazkowicz

This is a hard game to review. Its presentation, level design, weapon design, progression, and story all seem like it came from a game from 10-15 years ago. And while it would have been an impressive game back then, there are just far too many better examples of FPS games these days to really say that this is a great game. It's not bad. It just doesn't break any molds or innovate the genre in any way. And while its predecessor, Wolfenstein - The New Order, had a similar old school design, The Old Blood lacks that game's interesting level design. Difficulty in The New Order came from varied enemy types in large battle arenas, whereas difficulty in The Old Blood comes from simply throwing more of the same types of enemies at you, respawning ones in certain situations. To make matters worse, the last two chapters basically devolve into a bog-standard zombie shooter for the most part, ending the game on what I believe is a low note. The Pros: +The game runs really smoothly; much better than The New Order did. +Native 21:9 support. +The weapons, while "old school", feel well implemented and satisfying to use. The Cons: -Major texture popping. -Caused minor eye-strain. I believe that there's some sort of post process effect such as chromatic aberration or motion blur going on. Sitting further back from the screen and widening the FOV helped diminish the effect, but it was always there to some extent. People who are especially sensitive to such things won't have a good time with this game. -Boring story filled with boring characters. At no point did I ever care what was going on, why, or to who. Some people have complained about the short length of this game, but I don't consider that a negative mark at all in such a basic game. It took me about 9 1/2 hours to complete and I was definitely getting anxious for it to end. Recommended for FPS fans when on sale. If you're not already a fan of the FPS genre, then this game won't change your mind.

To butcher the franchise: Press "E"

1 star for being uncensored, both violence and symbolism are as intended. 1 star for the ok graphics. But if you are a connoisseur of FPS, you are going to hate this game. This is an insult to the immersion and fluent action of milestones like RTCW, Half-Life, Doom, Crysis, Duke Nukem, etc. The level design is always a tube where eventually you get cut off from the previous section to fight waves and waves of bullet-sponge enemies until either your boredom or frustration take over. You cannot fast and dynamically dodge, weave, run, duck, jump, lean, and tactically subdue the enemy, because controls and gameplay seem to be optimized for console. Your avatar is incredibly SLOW, UNRESPONSIVE and CLUMSY. Leaning and sliding require key combinations that ruin these moves on a PC. When you get caught in an animation, you are dead. You are forced into sneak missions but there is no sneak system. Constantly you have to climb walls by ramming metal pipes into it, very annoying, and enemies do not hear it, but during alarms they have you on GPS. You can get perks, but the game does not explain how, and you have no control over it. There are invisible walls. The story and maps are uninteresting, NPCs are pale, forgettable and die soon anyways. Apparently you now have a lover but she gets killed the second time you see her, and one mission later you have to save a girl that looks exactly like her, smh. And there is "E"! Press it to hold her hand (no joke), and to pick up every single bullet an enemy drops every single time. In firefights you crawl over the floor hectically in the necessary angle to press "E", otherwise you have no ammo. You'll wear out this key and your sanity. Halfway through, Old Blood turns into Resident Evil Zombie Apocalypse, finalizing its betrayal of the franchise. To have no stuttering on modern hardware, you need to manually create a cache directory for the game. But even then idling always leads to a program freeze. Bye, Sergeant Blazkovicz!

Newschool pseudo-oldschool-shooter

I really want to love it but here is the catch "it was never an oldschool shooter". The game always assumes to use the map to find secrets. The game unloads areas constantly. The guns feel fine but are far from good especially ADS and enemies just do a herd-alert-state with not reaction time to silence any enemy and poor map design for a "so called oldschool shooter". The game is good but average compared to RTC Wolfenstein, The Punisher, Max Payne, Fear, Doom 3 non BFG, The Saboteur, GTA games, Deus Ex 1-3, XIII, BLOOD1 for map design and intention in every area of the maps and Dishonored. Dishonored already ditched the story telling through conversations partially and no true journal entries and other readable which lead you to your goals without any NEED OF ARROWS. This series is the Uncharted of WW2 with hordes of useless Foes with 2 way hallways with worse areas than Half Life. Bethesda always needs to point your goal with a marker, map design is not strong at all when you need handholding. 100%ing is impossible without a map or you need to know where the door closes in the map. Constant scripted encounters, awkward spawns after pressing a door when you already cleared the past rooms where no door leads to the outside. The game just throws you tons of uninspiring enemies. Play Ion Fury or Dusk. Blood is the best from the retro pile. IF YOU PLAY IT RIGHT YOU GET SCARED FROM EVERY CORNER by enemies because the weight of their design and damage makes you fear every foe. Same in Stalker but most games can not do it. Stealth is so badly implemented, RTCW had better stealth. One guard is alarmed and will run to the base-alarm to push it or start shooting, then the rest will come. In TNO a door opens with more foes. If a game calls me stupid or do not trust me with playing the game the way it makes sense then the game is not worth it. TOB is nicer but man it is repetitive. The get out of jail section is dead. The start is dead. The village is the best.
