The game is amazing. Sorytelling is cool, creature designs are often quite unique, especially considering when the game originally came out. There is just one "slight" problem: The game loves to crash at the most inconvenient moments like after defeating certain bosses or trigerring certain event. If you can forgive for this, though, the game is solid gold when it comes to old school RPGs
Haven't played this game since it's release in 2000. Tried to get it running for years but sadly this game had a source code from hell. Problems everywhere. And now GOG made it possible to play it again. YES!!!
But even this release isn't without problems. A lot of people mention the mouse problems. I know them from my tests with my retail copy but don't have them with the GOG version. Everything is smooth (WIN10), only the characters in the upper left corner are not moving. But this is a minor bug. Also a lot of bugs from the original release are still there. But until now i didn't had a crash or anything else. With Jeff Ludwigs Patch and a newer DGVoodoo-Version, a lot of things also get better so anyone should try.
As for the game, still a gem but a rough one. But i like it's rough edges. It's so different to all those other RPG games, especially the modern ones. The dungeons are great, the combat fun and the class system really special. It's not a game for everyone but one of those games, which you only can love, if you take your time and play it for a while.
The game worked great for me for a good while. But after about five hours of playing, my saves would no longer work, saying "incompatible version". When I checked the SAV file, it turns out that after a while, the saves end up growing to 1000 KB rather the default 700 KB file size. Sadly, without a proper fix for that issue, the saves remain unusable and my progress lost.
So first about me, as a "gamer" I find my enjoyment of video games to be largely based on gaining strength, to the point that stories don't get completed, I just max a character and restart. As such, understand this review might not be for you.....
Also I'm suppose to incorporate my experiences of the game into the review....
So this game allows you to become obscenely powerful.... to the point that I would play with a single character and kill every NPC. Not using the turn based mode either, cause it's slow.
About the NPC's: The game allows for huge freedom as you play. Many Npc's you meet across the 3 maps will grant quests and "advance" the story. But the freedom comes as you don't have to co-operate, but can largely ignore or fight with the different factions you meet. The problem, if you choose not to co-operate is that the Boss NPC's are a bit strong (the mid map 1 Dragon that guards the hero sword thing, for example, one or two hits normal team members your first time through.)
The way I went about it, was to take a team of 2 to the third map, then reset the adventures and take the physical attack oriented member and complete every quest. After finishing an area, I'd clear it of inhabitants and loot everything and move on. With all the perks from quests and the experience that would normally be split by a party of 6, the one would become crazy strong. Soloing the dwarf king, the dragon, the passkey beasts on the 3rd map, including killing the 3 sages who appear at the start of the game surrounded by flames in the starting dream. (If you just played the game, you might find some mistakes in NPC bosses I might have just made, it's been a while...)
TLDR:
The feeling of power I could get from this game made for incredible fun. And made possible by meaty battles with over powered NPC's and the freedom to do in the game what shouldn't have been allowed.
