Talk with intelligent characters who react to how you treat them and become your allies or enemies in your quest of 200 hours of gameplay or more.
If you like Might and Magic or any turn based party RPG really, you can't get much better than Wizardry. With a ridiculous number of races and classes to choose from, you can play just about any way you'd like, from melee heavy to ranged parties to all magic parties, it's a blast. Some jank to be expected but there's mods out there that'll deal with the biggest bugs. I've run through the gog version multiple times and had no problems finishing the game.
If I ever see one those "top 50 RPGs of all time" articles and this isn't in the top 10 or so (or not on the list) then I can just move along knowing it's another Final Fantasy and JRPG gush-fest. Give me a ****ing break.
I'd have to say this is one of my top three or four favorite RPGs of all time. Might even top the list. I'd have to consider carefully.
Wizardry 8 is a "blobber" style of game -- your party moves as one cohesive unit throughout the game world, although you can set them up in various formations that DO make a difference during combat, which is turn-based. The graphics were dated even when the game came out. Despite that the game manages to be so immersive that it's uncanny.
This is red-meat RPG, folks.
PS -- I bought this back when you still had CDs in a box with a paper game manual.
Truly well made for its time, with plenty of features that make combat and exploration engaging without being too confusing, and a wonderful conclusion to the franchise. I enjoy bringing my party all the way here from Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, through Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant, and finally here.
