Description
What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of strange tales about a family in Washington state.

As Edith, you’ll explore the colossal Finch house, searching for stories as she explores her family history and tries to figure out why she's the last one in her family left alive. Each story you find lets you experience the life of a new family member on the day of their death, with stories ranging from the distant past to the present day.

The gameplay and tone of the stories are as varied as the Finches themselves. The only constants are that each is played from a first-person perspective and that each story ends with that family member's death.

Ultimately, it's a game about what it feels like to be humbled and astonished by the vast and unknowable world around us.

Created by Giant Sparrow, the team behind the first-person painting game The Unfinished Swan.

Decent walking simulator

First of all, it's a walking simulator. If you don't like those then this game isn't for you. I do enjoy these games every once in a while. And so I have enjoyed What Remains of Edith Finch as well. Although I'm not entirely happy with my purchase. You play as Edith Finch, who goes back to her ancestral home to explore both the house and her family's history. This results in multiple stories about family members, each have a different style, atmosphere and sometimes gameplay. They're quite creative and it does keep you playing as there's always something new. But to me these stories are hit and miss. There were two that I loved, I've already half forgotten the rest even though I just finished the game this evening. I didn't care at all for the overarching story. The voice-acting is good. The music is alright, I think an improvement here might've made the experience more invigorating, the two stories I liked had great music. The graphics are decent. The design of the world is good enough, it kept me looking around but it's nothing to shout about. The gameplay can be clunky. This review has gotten a bit more negative than I actually feel about the game. So I'll describe what I liked about the two stories that I did love. They really took adventage of this medium. A wonderful combination of story-telling, interaction, imagery and music. I really got sucked in fast, I fully related to these characters. I completed the game in a little over 2 hours and I did not rush. The content that I loved took maybe half an hour. I might come back later to replay those two stories. As fortunately there's the option to select a single story after you've finished the game. My advice: wait for a 50% sale. I bought it with 20% off but I just can't justify the money I spent for such a short amount of pleasure. But then again, I am a skinflint. And if you do really want to buy a walking simulator, I think this might be the best one out there. I hope this helps you in your purchase.

Just wow!

This game has everything I missed in Gone Home. I actually bought it quite some time ago and almost forgot everything about it so I didn't expect too much when I started it. Just another "go there, click that" story through empty rooms. But then it turned out to be an extraordinary experience. The story itself is not very important. A woman returns to her family's old house and tries to find out about their past. That's it, really. But the stories are told in a way I haven't seen before, I often found myself laughing my a... off. This is a must have for sure if you have any interest in story telling.

Good but not as emotional as promised

Well, the "click and play" style and game duration didn't shock me. The only thing I must say is I didn't feel any emotion for most of the cutscenes I played (except for the "Tales from the crypt"-styled and Lewis ones). Many deaths are too weird for me, some unbelievable, and mainly I found they were simply not interesting (even the bath scene, sorry). My time wasn't wasted, but I expected something else from the good reviews I had read.

Beautiful

Short, yes. But a hella of beautiful game. Immersive with an interesting story that will keep you wondering. If you are into interactive stories and walking simulators and enjoy a visually breathtaking experience, this is right for you.
