Description
Purgatory, Wyoming, 1888.
A place of gun smoke and darkness, sin and damnation, wendigos and witches. A shifting, chaotic world that takes its form from the memories, culture or beliefs of the souls who pass through. When a dead man awakens with only the memory of a figure in black, he sets into motion a chain of events that have truly mythic consequences.

Step into the boots of the dead man William Mason (voiced by Ron Perlman) and descend into the grim and gritty world of Purgatory in this fast-paced cover shooter which combines the fluidity of twin-stick controls and tactical cover usage. Put your skills to the test - Dodge behind cover as you try to outgun your enemies in the unknown procedurally generated hunting grounds. The Wild West has never been this dark.

Glitchy mess, abandoned by devs.

As the title says, a glitchy mess, from text repeating, audio issues, enemies teleporting, or damage/traps remaining after being destroyed... to complete progression and save destroying glitches like an NPC you need to talk to in order to finish the game never spawning, forcing you to reset your save. In addition to that, it was brought to my attention that the devs have since stopped updating the game on GOG, abandoning this version completely. I am not the kind of person to normally write reviews, when I do its for a game I absolutely love... or to warn people off from shit like this. And just to be fair, here is my take on the gameplay regardless... It feels like crap, at first... a slow, cover based game that seems to not want to be a slow cover based game at times, with some really slow and clunky feeling movement and some annoying enemy setups that don't match with the game feel, specially the weird focus it tries to put on melee and melee items when they are usually incredibly hard or ineffective to use... But after a while it clicks in place and becomes actually enjoyable, you get on the swing of things, start progressing and unlocking stuff, getting better at the game itself as well (learning to completely ignore melee and never bother with any of it)... And then you run into a progress ruining glitch and start to feel nothing but venom for the game... Yeah. Avoid this one, specially here, but on steam too.

Good enough.

Just some notes from my playthrough: 1)Gameplay Mostly a rogue-like. There are a few permanent upgrades that stay with you throughout the runs, but all other stuff is just unlocks that can spawn on your run. You get 2 weapons and 2 abilities and go through randomly generated rooms and corridors, kill stuff, find upgrade shrines etc. You have to reach the end in one take as death will reset the run. 2)Unlocks Generally, more expensive unlocks are usually not necessarily better than their cheaper counterparts. Hell, I found some of the starter weapons to be best to use. Unfortunately, the game forces you to spend currency on unlocks, which can lead to polluting your random item spawns throughout the runs with bad/weak weapons you want to avoid, actually making the game harder. You can spend currency but don't finish the unlocks fully to avoid it. 3)Difficulty There is a difficulty option in the settings. This was apparently added in one of the later patches but on a fresh install, it defaults to the lowest. Noticed it only after I finished my first playthrough of the first three chapters without dying once and this explains why. The original difficulty was apparently the 3rd out of the 4 available. They probably didn't test fresh installs, so just keep it in mind if the game seems awfully easy. Similarly, don't play on the hardest difficulty. It seems fine at first, but towards the end of the run, the enemies scale to extreme degrees. The 3rd difficulty seemed perfect. Played through on a KB+M without issues. 4)Narration. The only actual voice acting in the game is the main character. Voiced by Ron Perlman, it gives the game a good atmosphere. But also causes a stark contrast with the few grunts and noises all the characters make for their text bubbles. Can get a bit repetitive if you fail often though so you'll start skipping. 5)Bugs. One noticeable bug is that some enemies have bugged movement. They will twitch in place but if you get near, they'll attack.

Gimme Back My Skullets

An entertaining dark western odyssey full of mysticism, dope weapons and the deliciously gravelly narration of Ron Perlman. Unique combat mechanics and an absolutely baller aesthetic set it apart from other rogue-like titles and is well worth your time if you are a fan of the genre.

Superb Surrealism in the Old West

Upon seeing the videos of West of Dead I was hypnotized. The odd cmera angles, strange lighting, and peculiar theme of this roguelike gunfighter action thriller made it stand out among the slew of supernatural wild west titles that have flooded the market. Throw in the voice acting of Ron Pearlman as the protagonist of this story of death, atonement and redemption and you've got the makings of a one-of-a-kind classic. Rolling, sliding and sprinting your way from one flimsy cover point to another, desperately trying to get off a few clean shots before your shelter is stripped away. It's a frantic, high pressure challenge with each reload of your bizarre collection of guns and other tools that relents only when you yet again die and find yourself back in the Saloon at the Entryway of Limbo. You must collect Iron to buy new tools that appear randomly and Sin to sell for new abilities that marginally incrase your survival chances. Each new death sets you back almost to zero, and your struggle begins anew. Just as life in the gunsmoke hazed fontier was fragile, redemption shatters just as easily in death. Accept you know nothing, prepare for the unfathomable, and find your way to paradise by beoming the cleansing force other lost souls fear but which takes you closer to atonement one bullet at a time. Have iit yout way partner, will you be the instrument that sets the afterlife to rights, or will you end up West of Dead?
