If you enjoy other WoD visual novels then this will also scratch that itch. It is interesting that the story takes inspiration from real events on the Poland/Belarus border.
This is a great sequel to Heart of the Forest, and one that builds on the accolades that game received. In fact, it's a bit of a shame this one hasn't received the same attention, as it's better in most ways, though the streamlined Heart of the Forest is likely more easily accessible for newcomers to the systems and lore of apocalypse.
The art, audio, and writing here are to the same largely high standard--if you liked or disliked those in Heart, you'll know what you're getting. The story allows follows the decades-old traditions Werewolf confronting the ugly parts of human society, and the corruption that goes with it in the form of the Wyrm.
The story here feels tighter, with a stronger emotional core, and moves along at a better clip with what feel like more impactful choices throughout the story. While of course there is only so much variety, a major decision fork early on makes a second playthrough much more novel.
Systems-wise, RPG/character building types like me will appreciate the more direct player choice in aspects like tribe, auspice, and specific character aptitudes, along with the ability to use skills, gifts, and items occasionally throughout the gameplay. To me, this was Heart's biggest gap, so it's great to have more direct control here, and enough "gamey" aspects to add flavor to the narrative experience.
Highly recommended to fans of Heart, or to any Apocalypse fans interested in this type of narrative experience, but newcomers will find the more stripped-down Heart a better entry point to the world. If you're on the fence because you missed some of those gameplay beats, don't expect a massive change, but if you're like me those added elements may be just what you wanted.
