Description
We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially-enthused society.

Retrofuturistic 1960s England

Set in retrofuturistic 1960s England, you will find a city ravaged by war and rebuilt by delusionally happy people. Everything appears to be happy in Wellington Wells, including the roads, the people, and its omnipresent television personality, Uncle Jack! However, it’s a big, idyllic world on the brink of collapse. You will discover the history of this world, and how it came to be just so beguilingly happy.

Three Interwoven Narratives

Play as three flawed characters who explore their own connections to the events surrounding the rebuilding of Wellington Wells. They each have a unique storyline in which they interpret and react to the events around them in different ways. As you hide, conform, or fight back as each of them, you will encounter dark humour, a spot of hope, and even some redemption along the way.

Procedurally Generated World

In We Happy Few no two playthroughs are alike. While the citizens of Wellington Wells will always want to ensure that you’ve taken your Joy, the procedurally generated world will ensure that your experience with We Happy Few is different and unique.

Customizable Gameplay

Aside from a procedurally generated world, there are many ways to customize your We Happy Few experience:
  • Choose from a range of difficulties for new and experienced players alike,
  • Play through the story, or customize the sandbox world to your liking,
  • Try permadeath, if you want to satisfy all your masochistic needs,
  • Collect recipes, scavenge items, and craft dozens of weapons, tools, and devices,
  • Creep, crush, or conform your way through puzzles and encounters, and
  • Fight with your bare hands or the crazy weapons you create.

awful.

Played around 10-12 hours this game aaaaand.. + the initial idea is pretty cool so you might find this game interesting if you watch someone playing it for up to 10-15 minutes - worst use of the unreal engine, bugs all over, crashes to the desktop and getting stuck in the textures. - the quests are tedious and uninteresting.. - the characters, both enemies and npcs are getting boring really fast. - the animations of the people seems like they have being made at 10-20 fps by high school students.. - the world is too big and too bland.. so few interesting to be seen and so much to walk.. - the notes and collectibles in the world are utterly boring and badly written. - the stealth mechanics are modest and many times frustrating I really don't see why someone would spend money on this in this state..

Very overly impressed with itself.

I don't know a gamer that could pay the asking price for this game and not have severe buyers remorse. Even at half the price, you must be really starved for the asthetic.

Lots of Potential but falls short

*This review comes after completing the whole game (30+ hours) and maxing out the perks in all chapters. Before this game came out I had it on my radar due to its unique design, being a cross between the colourful 60s aesthetics with a design being inspired by A Clockwork Orange and Patrick McGoogans "The Prisoner" (of which I am a big fan). After forgetting about it for a while after it entered early access (after it spawned the memetic "Charismatic Duck" glitch), I discovered it was finally released at v1.0 at E3 2018 Pros: The video segments of the Uncle Jack character are brilliant, the actor really knocked it out the park and it proved to be one of the most immersive parts of the game. Coming out of this game, I would love to see what new media projects he is part of as his acting is top notch! The story based missions and fleshed out missions are excellent, funny and strange however this missions are few and far between and you'll find that some fleshed out missions descend into fetch quests. I felt it was a good series of stories which kept me engaged with the characters, Sally's arc in particular was high stake and really helped paint a dystopian picture of Wellington Wells. Cons Open world wasn't really needed or utilised well enough in the game. You found that the distance between everything acted as a time sink for the story than a world to explore, a much smaller world with more in it would be better. Glitches are still hampering story beats, Sally in particular would stop all dialogue after being in combat and would not resume until the game was exited and entered. Needs less time between story beats and missions which don't require traversing the map and returning to just get to the next bit of story, I felt that these were just there to increase time which is a pain. All in all, I enjoyed it for the story and design but the open world combined with quests which are there to pad out the game time doesn't lend itself to a second playthough.

It had potential.

We Happy Few tries to combine a dystopian story with a survival gameplay, but these aspects don't quite work together and sometimes even step on each other's toes. Also the execution of the game as a whole, leaves a lot to be desired.

Disappointing

I backed this on Kickstarter and had high hopes from all the dev diaries, but the release version is just no fun. Arthur has to be the most pathetic protagonist I've ever encountered. Too much of his chapter consists of "walk 10 feet, get in a fight, have a flashback", sometimes mixed with awkward conversations where he comes off like a nervous schoolboy talking to his first crush. The look and setting are quite interesting, but the game itself should have been so much better.
