Better than Battles, more fun than TW

I have not yet written a review for GOG, but this forgotten gem deserves it. I am one of the few people who (I cannot remember exactly how - it may have been second-hand) bought and played this game shortly after it came out, based on nothing other than a low price and the intimation from the box blurb that it looked decent enough. To cut a long story short - it had issues! It felt a bit like an unfinished beta, and it took me a while to get it to run without problems. I assume these things have been addressed in the GOG release (I seem to recall there was an eventual patch that more or less sorted it out). It was also initially quite confusing and not entirely obvious what one was expected to do, or how to do it. But something kept me persevering. I found that the game ran too fast for my liking at its default speed, so a couple of hits of the minus key slows it to a much more leisurely pace and allows you to enjoy the rather beautiful landscape and the activities of your peasants as they go about their daily tasks. It also makes battles less frantic and more tactical, which I prefer. This game immersed me into its world more than almost any other RTS. Once you configure the totally free camera to your liking you will find you have complete and easy freedom to move around the (sometimes enormous) maps - this alone makes this game superior to most RTS-type games, where the view is weirdly restricted to a small area at a particular strange angle! Having experienced the total freedom in Warrior Kings many other RTS games will seem horribly limited, view-wise. The Artos campaign for me was highly enjoyable. Siege weapons are spectacular. The final battle of the single player campaign lives in my memory as one of the greatest experiences I have had in thirty years of PC gaming. WK:Battles was slightly more polished, but the maps seem smaller and the grand scale and atmosphere of the original is lost. Still great, but not quite as magical. Buy them both!

A Game with Truly Different Endings

Are you tired of games who tell you that they offer XY different endings, but in reality, they offer the same ending with just minor changes? Then you are at the right place. Warrior Kings not only have three different endings, but also three different paths you can follow! There are three paths- Paganism, Imperial and Renaissance. Each of them have their pros and cons. Pagans are the only ones who can use monsters, but have weak defences. Imperials can build strong defences but their elite warriors are rather expensive. They can train monks who bless their warriors. Renaissance have the best siege engines in the game, although their soldier aren't very strong compared to the other two factions. Thanks to their technology tree, they are the best at gathering resources. Each of these paths has it's own story, meaning you will meet different characters and travel to different lands. Each of the paths also has some exclusive buildings and warriors. For example, Imperials can build churches and only the followers of Renaissance will be able to build trebuchets. This, in my opinion, is one of the strongest points of the game. Other advantages of the games are for instance support for FullHD by default, very good atmosphere and music. I also like the graphics style, but most people will probably call it ugly at best, in my opinion. The game play is also good, as far as I am concerned. The first disadvantage of the game is that it doesn’t have any skirmish, only the campaign. The tutorial isn't very helpful. It consists just of four lessons, where can’t do anything. You just watch and read, but can’t practise anything. I also had some technical issues. Sometimes, the game crashed. I had rather low fps(cca 20 fps) compared to the PC specs that I was playing the game on back then(2GHz Intel Dual Core, GeForce 8600GT, 2GB Ram). Units sometimes tend to teleport, rather than just walk to their destination. Some people may say that the game is too hard.

I remember it being good, but slow.

I own this game on CD and still remember not playing it for quite a time, until my parents upgraded our old PC; it was quite demanding for the hardware when it came out, IIRC. WK is a strategy game in which you manage a base with food, housing, lumber and gold. You produce dozens of units of different kinds to crush your enemy. Units come in tiers, have unique abilities and require simple logistics: for example ranged units must have a supply of ammunition. In the campaign your actions will determine which technological path you take: holy, renaissance (think: hi-tech) or pagan. The paths can be combined: holy with renaissance and renaissance with pagan, so you come up with 5 tech trees overall, each with unique structures and units. What's really fun in WK? Your small base will slowly turn from a village into a sprawling city, with walls, castles and fortified gates. Your pack of units will grow into a massive force that will take up the whole screen. There's a nice scaling to all of that. What's not so fun is the pacing. The game feels slow, maps are vast and most units don't move quickly. If you're not into RTSes that feel almost like turn-based, you might want to skip this one.

Excellent game

This game is one of the old classics. Graphics are definitely outdated, but very smooth and not so old that you can't figure out what things are. The pixelation and blocky figures actually give it charm. I hadn't played this one before, but found myself easily drawn into the game. Learning curve was pretty low for anyone that has played the old warcraft style games. All in all, very much enjoyed this one. Would recommend it to anyone that likes the resource gathering, build economy and army, then destroy the enemy type games.

Warrior Kings

Apart from Stronghold this must be my all time favorite game! This game has it all. Great strategy, complexity, lots of different units, atmosphere and Humour. A great game, ahead of it's time and still very playable! It's a real loss for the strategy players that, after Warrior Kings, and it's successor, there never appeared a higher graphic version, Any strategy game designer should feel challenged to acquire the rights for this game. And to modernise the graphics (but no more than that!) A masterpiece ; ))
