Throwback Thursday Recommendation

We share the earnest reasons that make a classic game so dear to us!

Recommended by Michal, Content Marketing Specialist at GOG: If there exists a classic strategy game that can compete with the Heroes of Might and Magic series in terms of hot seat fun – it must be Warlords. And since I started my adventure with gaming on Amiga 600 in the early 90-ties, Warlords was actually the title to tackle if you wanted to play an exciting strategy game against your friends in a turn-based strategy duel.

The game has a classic fantasy setting, obviously inspired by Lord of the Rings books, and 8 playable factions, each with its unique units. Your mission is to conquer all cities on the map or at least pound enemies’ armies so hard they’ll sue for peace. What made Warlords stand out is the fact that you could recruit heroes to command your units. Heroes were also able to explore various ruins present on the map in search of treasures and monstrous allies that could join their army, giving every playthrough a classic RPG flavor.

The success of Warlords in 1990 paved the road for various sequels, including both turn-based and real-time strategies, most of them available on GOG.COM. The cool addition to Warlords II was a level editor that gave birth to a whole stream of fan-created content that you can admire in Warlords II Deluxe.

All in all, I highly recommend playing the Warlords series, especially if you love turn-based games and want to experience a huge dose of nostalgia!

A Great Game, Not Just a Fond Memory

I played Warlords II Deluxe a lot back when it was new. Due to tech advances it got to where I couldn't play it for years, but now GOG has brought it back. Fond memories made me buy it right away, but at first I wondered if I'd made a mistake. The relatively clunky old interface made the game seem like a relic of the past. Recently, though, I took some time to relearn it, get used to the interface, and play a full game. Now it's a game I'll be playing all the time. Some reviewers compare the Warlords games unfavorably to the more modern Heroes of Might and Magic series or the Age of Wonders series. I've played a lot of both, and I can honestly say Warlords is superior in at least one way--elegant simplicity. Modern games of this type tend to throw in everything but the kitchen sink, making for clutter and needless complication. Warlords is refreshingly streamlined. It plays faster while affording all the interest and challenge a player could want. It's not for everybody. It's probably not for anybody who values all the cinematic effects of modern video games. But it's a highly rewarding game for those who appreciate the strategy genre.

The best and most re-playable TBS game.

On my all time top 10 list of games, WL2 DX is No. 1. WL2 DX has more variety than any other TBS game before and since. The scenario and unit creator opens the doors for unlimited ideas and settings. The game it self comes with a wide variety of scenarios, units, settings and maps and there is still a rather small, but active fan base alive on the www.

Excellent game

I have been looking to play this game again. It was an awesome experience back then, and because of its simplicity it will age in the future. Warlords II was a "simple" strategy game, with clean graphics. You control cities and armies and even heroes who go to quests. The AI was good and challenging and played well with the diplomacy. It always looked like a board game to me and the former manual, not the Deluxe, showed like a board game. I'd say it's and advanced board game. Try it, I enjoyed a lot. I know the deluxe version includes an editor, I never used it because the game lets you generate random maps.

A childhood Favorite

I played the heck out of warlords 1 on my parent's dos pc back in the late 80s early 90s when the game was still new. Though I never played warlords 2 I did play 3, and the game only got better. I spent hours and hours on the one map for warlords 1. Pure nostalgia and an important part of my childhood. The game is a turn based strategy game taking place in midevil fantasy. The units each castle can produce are set in stone, so you get special units by either starting or taking over castles that naturally can produce them. Want elven archers? Start as green. Want Griffon riders? Start with dark blue. Want dwarves? Start with yellow. Or you can attack and capture those castles in time. All colors always start in the same spot and there is no randomization in the first game. However there is a ton of strategy to be used. Who to go for first? How to defend? Who to play as? The game also allows hotseat multiplayer. Now that I know this game is on here I will definitely be playing this old dos game again.
