Description
When the stone Tears of Heaven, Navarre and Lucifus, fell from the sky, their appearance changed the world. Navarre, the white tear, had a life-giving power while Lucifus sowed death and destruction. Eight factions raced to harness the magic of both tears for themselves, giving them the command over life and death. The winds of war swept the land as the Minotaurs, Dwarves, Barbarians, Undead, High Elves, Wood Elves, and Dark Elves clashed in conflict of dominion over the Tears of Heaven.

Warlords Battlecry translates the classic turn-based Warlords gameplay into a fast and furious real-time strategy game. Your magic can boost the offensive power of your heroes’ troops. Your heroes gain experience and skills that can turn the tide of battle, such as magic resistance and advanced gathering of resources for your war effort. With dozens of skills, hundreds of units, eight different factions, and a slew of maps to choose from, Warlords Battlecry has all the ingredients of an RTS classic.

Compatibility notice: Warlords Battlecry is not compatible with Windows XP 64-bit.
  • Develop your hero through scenarios, campaigns, and multi-player games in a magical fantasy environment.
  • Cast a variety of unique spells and share their power with troops within your command radius.
  • Eight factions to choose from, each with very different strengths and weaknesses.

The Best Game No One Played

That's how Gamespot portrayed this game back in 2000. And they were right. From a complete lack of marketing and almost a complete lack of reviews, Warlords Battlecry seemed doomed from the start. And yet, the game became some of those cult games, with poor sales, but talked about. It was a pioneer back in the days: it was one of the most complex mix of RPG with RTS. You had a hero, that you could develop in any way you thought that would fit your gameplay ( restricted by the chosen class, though, but hey, you have a LOT OF SKILLS, so you could pull quite a few builds for every class). You had troops that would upgrade themselves to heroes, not as powerful as your main hero, but with a few of those you could clear a good chunk of the map. Those heroes that would come from the troops could be carried from one map to another in the campaign mode, provided that you had enough points to sustain them. The strategies are varying from race to race, you could come with quite a few ways to skin a cat, eerr... an enemy. And did i mentioned map quests and items to equip your hero?! Also, another nice touch, it had an Iron Man mode. If your hero would die, you'd lose your savegame and you'd start the game all over. For the harcore players, that was one of the highlights of the game. I was a big fan of the original TBS Warlords series, so Battlecry came as a shock to me. But the game has a way to get under your skin. Once you start playing it, it sticks with you. It lodges into your brain and want more and more. One nice thing, SSG wasn't discouraged by the poor sales. Hence the sequels; Battlecry 2 ( introducing a dynamic map with attack/defend/quest-something that you will see later in Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and Emperor: Battle for Dune) and Battlecry 3 (more races, more-revamped classes). If you are willing to give this game a chance, you are in for a treat.

The game that ended too quickly

Warlords Battlecry was that game I had grabbed with much anticipation. I often think about this game, because I brought it home with a weekend of nothing to do, but play Warlords Battlecry. The game ended before the weekend was up. That's not to say it's a short game at all, but I was so into playing it that after going 16hrs a day Friday and Saturday, Sunday I was left wishing I there was more game left to play. i'm not big on RTS. I do like the Warcraft series, Myth games, but never really got into C&C much. What I liked was this game blended RTS with RPG so well. It was the first game I had played where both components were present but not overpowered. Another reviewer said Battlecry ruined the Warlords games and I think that's a false statement. I had never played a Warlords game until Battlecry and after I finished the game I ran to the store and got a copy of the turned based Warlords. It was something new from the same mythos. It's like blaming Ultima Online for ending Ultima series or Might & Magic. It's just another way to play. I have played Warlords 2 and 3, but for me neither compared in greatness. Perhaps it was just the surprise of playing it the first time. Maybe it's because Battlecry 1 is a better game. I don't really know now. It's been 12 years since I last played. I think I'm going to have to buy it again and compare :)

Everything you want in a fantasy RTS

The Battlecry series took the much-loved turn-based Warlords games in a real-time direction, and did a very competent job of it. The games each offer a detailed campaign and a skirmish mode with a variety of map types, races, and units to play. One of the best features of the game was your retinue - a collection of up to 8 units you could transfer from one map to the next, keeping the experience they had gained. Each battle comes with a certain number of starting points, and as your retinue level up they can become quite expensive to deploy, but watching your level 8 fairy zooming around single-shotting the orc hordes makes it all worthwhile. Battlecry 2 offered a nice graphics upgrade, and Battlecry 3 is (not surprisingly) the most polished, and has more races and units available, but the original game had some neat features that were removed from the sequels in the name of simplicity, including ships and airships for transport. I'm hoping that we'll soon see Battlecry 2 to complete the trilogy, but between the original and the third game you do get most of what the series has to offer.

Fun is the name

This game has many hidden gems. The separate faction mechanics, units that you can train througout the game, multiplayer, titans and dragons and everything you need to have fun. It's not the best strategy game around but if you're a casual like me, you won't find a game that's much more enjoying than this.

Excellent blend of RTS and RPG

Warlords Battlecry was the first game I played that really mixed RTS and RPG successfully. It's classic high fantasy that should be enjoyed but any who love the genre. I would say of all the Warlords Battlecry games, this one has the best story mode but the other two are better in terms of game mechanics and overall gameplay. Definitely worth picking up.
