Discover the grim dark universes of Warhammer where there is only war. From Warhammer 40,000 to Warhammer Fantasy and more - discover it all on GOG Warhammer Franchise page.

“Sound The Charge. We Go To War!”

In the grim world of Warhammer, powerful armies clash in cataclysmic battles. Orc hordes batter at the gates of the Empire, mighty bastion of humanity, whilst the twisted and malign servants of chaos gnaw at the very fabric of society from within.

For those who can read the signs, a hideous and terrifying pattern is emerging through the haze of strife and warfare. The oracles and portents all tell of much worse to come. of an impending time of death and destruction unrivaled in the history of the world.

As the leader of the infamous Grudgebringers, you are unwittingly drawn into this insidious plot. Your mercenary army must halt the unstoppable tide of evil that assaults the Empire before all is lost. Rivers of blood will surely flow before the flood is finally stemmed, but try you must, for every sword has a part to play in the titanic struggle to destroy the servants of the Horned Rat...

As the first ever video-game adaption of the Warhammer world, Shadow of the Horned Rat not only brings the table-top adventure to life in this real-time strategy, but adds its own story to the wondrous mythos. With over 25 individual troops to choose from, you can create and lead your own army to battle across the many fields of the Old World. You can also forge your own story in this adventure, choosing to follow the main story and defeat the Skaven and Orc forces, or accept the work of the many patrons Paymaster Dietrich can procure. With increasing difficulty and expansive lore, this adaptation is a fine first-step for the franchise and a must-play for both RTS and Warhammer fans alike.

  • You command a mercenary army, choosing your forces from over 25 troop types to best defeat your enemies
  • The battles are linked together by a detailed storyline, as you steer your way through this time of strife and conflict in the Warhammer World
  • Hear the trumpets fanfare as the swords clash over the screams of the dying, echoing across the field of battle
  • Retire to gloat over your plundered rewards, or to lick your wounds as you count the cost of the dead
  • Fully customise and co-ordinate your army and strategise victory in real-time
  • Create your own legacy– follow the campaign and uncover the Skaven plot, or complete your patrons’ missions and earn fame, glory and gold

Excellent Old-Timer Warhammer!

A charming game from the olden days of Warhammer, has such personality and vibes that even the clunky controls (that one learns on the go!) do not bother -- at least someone truly into the universe of Warhammer. For others I'd perhaps recommend a second thought before diving in! Have never regretted myself, though.

Dice rolls, that's it.

I made a full let's play of this game. in a nutshell you basically roll a dice to see if you can proceed to the next level. In a not so nutshell: You take your mercenaries into battle, you fight greenskins and skavens, you squint your eyes for secret items, you manage your casualties and roster. Branching paths, not many, one in the early game that can lead to some interesting missions and allies(which you get anyway but later). Granted most branching paths are just optional missions. Very difficult game that requires you to play a battle a couple of time to learn the flow of enemy reinforcements. This is absolutely great if not for one thing....everything is a random dice roll and if you take unknowingly too many casualties you have to restart the ENTIRE CAMPAIGN should you accept the victory. Every battle is a random event where even if you execute it perfectly a bunch of stickers can wipe out multiple regiments because of dice rolls, dice rolls everywhere. You would think your top tier armor cavalry(not the starting one) can survive at least one volley of arrows...nope! dice rolls!! because dice rolls were a thing of the 90s, you gotta have dice rolls in "vidjeogaimes" This, Fantasy general and every SSI game aside from sword of aragon(best game ever made) suffers from this problem, dice rolls.

Hard on Linux but an entertaining one

I've discovered this game too late, thank to the gods, because it could have destroyed my social teen life. The game is quite old, time is graving on UX and tactical view of the units. By the way the story, pixel art and music are still great today (for my personal taste). Make tactical map and midi music work under Linux has been really a pain, but know that it works I'm really enjoying it. If you are a fan of retro-gaming and Warhammer Fantasy world I can easly reccomend it to you.

There Is a Good Game Here!

There is a good game here, somewhere behind all the Jank. The game runs pretty well I haven't had any visual or audio problems the only issue I have is that it takes a bit to transition between menus. Now I will give my sincere opinion the game absolutely needs a remaster. As said before there is a good and possibly great game here especially if you're into Warhammer The Old World. I am one of the newest fans of Warhammer and I'm always keen to play more Video Games on my favourite universe but this is really not playable for me. I am no stranger to 90's RTS games. I grew up playing StarCraft, Command & Conquer and Age of Empires so I know what to expect from early RTS jank with pathfinding, controls and such but this game feels worse to control than the original WarCraft and Dune 2. Nothing feels natural I can't pan the cammera by moving the cursor to the sides of the screen and it uses that old Dune 2 style of controls where you have to order your units my clicking on the move button and then on the ground to move a unit. As for the UI it's awful and you can't really tell at a glance what button does what. All in All there's a great game here that needs some love I am saddened that it will probably remain as an early 90's jank and never get a remaster it so desperately needs. As of now don't spend your money on it unless you're familiar with the game and its quirks, if you want a simmilar experience to this I can't recommend Mark of Chaos enough and Total War Warhammer 2 (soon to be 3) if that kind of game. Great game its age kills it!
