Discover the grim dark universes of Warhammer where there is only war. From Warhammer 40,000 to Warhammer Fantasy and more - discover it all on GOG Warhammer Franchise page.

An Incendiary Clash with the Forces of Chaos!

Command a squad of up to 20 Space Marines and pursue the evil Chaos horde though the Warhammer 40,000 universe! CHAOS GATE is squad-level, turn-based tactical action that pits you against Chaos Lord Zymran, in an attempt unravel the mystery of an ancient relic.

Your command begins with a choice: pursue the game plot immediately or take on any number of random missions to gain experience and power for your squad. Whichever you choose, prepare for the unexpected – and tactical combat that’s utterly out of this world!

As SSI’s second entry in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Chaos Gate marries the lore of the 40,000 universe with the strategic depth of an SSI game and creates an engaging experience that further glorifies the Emperor and the Adeptus Astartes’ Legacy.

  • Battle Chaos Space Marine forces and their daemonic allies across the galaxy in a Campaign of 15 linked scenarios or explore randomly generated missions to gain power for your Ultramarine troops.
  • Create and customize a squad from a Space Marine contingent of 50 different soldiers, each with unique characteristics and capabilities - including Terminators, Assault Marines and Devastator Squads.
  • Build custom missions with the extremely flexible Mission Editor.
  • Command the vehicles of the Warhammer 40,000 universe: Predator tanks, Rhino APCs, Land Speeders and Dreadnoughts.

Been Waiting for Years

I still have the disc version of this game but never had a rig that could play it and I am too impatient to play around with DOS emulators. I'm lucky because the game plays well on my machine. I finished the first mission, which was quite long yet managed never to be dull. The graphics are grainy but still, in my opinion, excellent overall. The music and sound effects are quite good. Controls work very well. The game is easy to figure out. If you've played other squad-based games you'll figure this out in no time. As for gameplay, you have to plan and move carefully or Chaos will take you out quickly. Lots of marine units to choose from. Thanks GOG.

One of the most atmospheric 40K games

Chaos Gate oozes with atmosphere: The soundtrack feels like it was made in universe (even though it is mostly repurposed religious chants). Your Space Marines feel like walking tanks. They can still die, and each death of a brother feels painful (especially if playin Mighty Hero mode), but it will take a lot of firepower to bring them down. The game is played over a set of fixed campaign missions, with some randomized skirmishes in between. The campaign missions are pretty well done, and feel like 40Kish X-COM. The skirmish missions are usually much less interesting. Over the course of the campaign, you will unlock a large part of the standard Space Marines roster and armoury (Terminator armors, Librarians, assault marines with jump packs), but you can only bring 3 squads, and need to adhere to the Codex Astartes when it comes to mission loadout (so you'll have more bolters than you'd want!). Even to this day, I still consider it one of the best 40K games made on PC, and I played all of the tactical/strategic ones.

FOR THE EMPEROR - An overlooked classic

If you are into the Warhammer 40,000 universe this is a great addition to the grimdark setting with some features that are pretty advanced for its time in the 90s. Permanent death of your marines makes for an interesting strategic decision making as well as the optional missions along your path being an extra risk. You battle your way through the campaign commanding squads of Ultramarines; very familiar to any currently giving Space Marine 2 a try. With a variety of weapons and elite units gained along the way. The game has a good feel similar to the scale of the tabletop game. It's not without its flaws. It has some of the buggyness of other games from the 90s, and the ability to understand line of sight on the isometric 3D view leaves a little to be desired. From time to time the AI makes some questionable decisions and there's maybe not quite the variety of enemies and maps I would like. But none of this is too bad and is understandable for a game of it's era so overall this is a great blast from the past that feels just different enough from other strategy games like C&C or Age of Empires to be a great addition to your options if you're a fan of the genre. And I contine to be surprised by how many hours of play I am getting out of the campaign without even messing with custom battles etc.

If you are ok with retro

No preformance problems but it does seem the enemy has an edge even in easy mode. So you new kids would say its a souls like game. I only played a demo of this back in the day and had no idea what warhammer was or how to play it. At the time the graphics were awesome. For its time, this has a lot of customization. While it can break the table top rules of mixing weapon types. The UI is clunky but its at least legable and it makes sense after a few turns of combat so you don't need to reach for a manual on how to play, maybe get some of the finer points. Enough clicking around and I was ok, but I'm also from that time. Idk if you youngsterrs will like it, as their is only one song for battle and it loops, but that midi track be slapping! The biggest irritant I have is when your guys are attacked at best they say 'im hit' or make a reaction, but you don't know untill they are dead or click on them. That's just something of the time tho. Also, I think it was designed to be played on harder difficulties where one shot will kill a guy. Yet playing tacticly enough, it gets mitigated. Suprising amounts of depth for its time. It takes me back to jagged alliance.

40K Does Original Xcom

Exactly as the title, if you played the O.G Xcom game but wanted the same with Astartes and more of them on the ground to face the forces of Chaos, well here you go. The RNG doesn't seem as harsh as what plagued the Xcom games, sometime turning them into save scummers just to get by without losing those troops you've nurtured from the early days ( up until that point where psyonics made it all irrelevant ). Game works fully with Windows 10 out of the box, so that's a massive winner ! The Soundtrack is also legendary and you'll already know most of the tunes if you've watched any of the fan made stuff on You Tube - Especially BRUVA ALFABUSA and the excellent 'If the Emperor had Text to Speech' series, and if you haven't watched any of that, get this game then go away and watch TTS immediately. Yep, soild recommend, even I dare say at normal price, but it's 26 years old so no rush, wait for that glorious sales time. That's it 10/10 Have a good 1
