More Painkiller than DOOM
WH40k: Boltgun is supposed to be an homage to retro shooter and if you like to be locked in a room with lots of spawning enemies like in Painkiller than this game is probably for you. But if you rather liked Doom or Duke Nukem 3D then this game will probably disappoint you. Sure there are good things here like beefy weapon sounds and hit feedback - seeing a heretic explode when hit by a bolter round never gets old but there are a lot rather bad design decisions. There is no map function; you only get a "trail of breadcrumbs" for a short time by key press. And it only functions when you are not standing at an unusual position like eg. on a crate. Most secrets aren't really hidden. Weapon upgrades are not permanent and only last for the current mission and so far I only ever found one per mission. Every weapon has a strength value and depending on the strength value of an enemy does more or less damage which is indicated by a symbol. Most enemies have lots of hitpoints and even with weapons with the highest strength value need several hits to be killed. Almost all missions have one or more purge rooms in which the player is locked in with spawning enemies of which are many of the stronger type. And the last mission of the DLC is just one big purge room with two boss demons, three big targets that need to be destroyed of which one is a bullet sponge and unlimited spawning enemies. And that wasn't fun at all.
