More of the same

Run around Chaos-tainted environments and purge heretics with your overpowered weapons. Slightly different environments this time, with a few slightly different heretics, and a couple of extra weapons. I would have liked it more if they had gone a bit further to differentiate it from the base game, maybe by adding demons from the pantheons of the other two Chaos gods, but it's still fun as it is. If you liked the original campaign, then you'll like this.

New toys, old baggage

It's more Boltgun. Contains 5 more maps, or 4 large maps and a big combat arena for 2 - 3 hours of fun. The 2 new weapons are useful and actually do some damage, unlike... say... the Plasma Rifle. Most enemies are still too tanky, Aspiring Champions are still jank, Plasma Cultists still blend into the backgrounds (and are more numerous), but at least the new enemies are a bit of fresh air. Havocs have missile launchers. Deadly, for you and them - you can blow them up with their own missile. Same goes for the new Plasma CSM variant. The Lightning Claw Terminators will rush you down, making them the tankiest melee enemy outside of bosses, they're a lot more dangerous than the regular variant. The Chaos Dreadnought is a new sub boss encounter. Not quite as tanky as the Greater Daemons but usually comes with extra baggage (in one case, a dozen Bloatdrones). Oh and the new enemies have better accuracy as well, so they will actually hit their shots. New maps look more varied as well, if the whole base campaign was like this it would have felt much better. However, the encounters drag even longer than the base game so if combat arenas aren't your thing this won't win you over either. It's good if you liked Boltgun and the asking price is fair, all things considered, but if you had problems with the base game you might want to reconsider as Forges of Corruption does not fix the issues with the game at all.

More Boltgun is good for you (or is it?)

Released a year after Boltgun, Forges of Corruption is a fine addition. It’s more of the same… Both in good and in bad. Malum Caedo continues his journey to bring the Emperor’s light back on Forge World Graia, one dead heretic at a time, and his methods haven’t changed. The slaughter in FoC is still the same, it just takes place in some new levels. There are few gameplay additions, but they’re pretty sweet: there are 3 new enemy types, the new guns are a much-needed and very efficient rocket launcher and a Multi-Melta that’s great at destroying fiends (but sadly even better at destroying my framerate)... and a smartly implemented “navigation guide” can now be used to help you find your ways through levels. This isn’t really needed for FoC, which has pretty straightforward level design, but it’s a welcome addition for the main campaign, since some places were confusing to navigate. In other news, the DLC also adds a “Horde mode”, which is always a nice thing to have in a boomer shooter, and it could be argued to have even better art direction. Those chunky pixels sure make those chaos-corrupted environments look very cool. FoC only has one real issue. An expansion is often the occasion for developers to try and correct the mistakes of the main campaign and show that their game design has improved, and this one… Doesn’t do that. I think that the big issue with Boltgun was that it didn’t know when to stop, as it kept pitting you against hordes of bullet sponges in long arena fights: FoC pulls the exact same crap, constantly locking you into “purge sequences” that go on for way too long, and thus becoming pretty tedious and sluggish to go through after a while. Hope you still like wasting ammo on those plague toads... In the end, this DLC is just more Boltgun – I will absolutely satisfy you if you liked the OG, but it definitely won’t win you over if you didn’t. In any case, it’s just the right length and is well-priced, so you might as well grab it!

A True 40K Expansion

I'm old enough to remember when games recieved in-box expansion packs rather than today's DLC. Expansion packs, for FPS games, often required the base game to play and ususally added new levels, perhaps a weapon or two and a campaign to go along with it. FoC is, therefore, a callback to those original expansion packs of days past without the physical box to go with it. Check out my review of Boltgun to get a good idea of what I think of it, but in short: it is F-U-N. It won't move the soul or challenge previously held notions of morality - it is simply a good bit of shooting from a character whose name (Malum Cadeo) literally translates to "I Kill Evil." FoC is more of the same, introducing a half-dozen new levels, a few new enemies and two new weapons to the mix. If you liked Boltgun and want more, I cannot recommend Forges of Corruption enough. If, however, Boltgun was not to your taste then FoC will not change your mind. For any new player, I would recommend the Forges of Corruption edition of Boltgun as it includes the base game and expansion for a lower price than buying both seperately.
