Fun, adds much needed gameplay improvements
The comparison to the dungeon keeper series is inevitable. I must say not adding to the hype of the "spiritual successor" this game is fun, plain and simple. It fixes some of the more annoying problems the dungeon keeper series had - like adding a "peace list" where certain creatures can be dropped in and won't respond to the rally command - adding lists of creatures which you can specifically order to certain points on the map. Order you magicians behind your close combat units. No need to drop your units and watch out for what you are doing. On top of that - my biggest concern - the creatures are unique and have a certain "cool" factor that I do not miss my creatures from the dk series. Another great feature are the "creatures". One can build a lair which only unintelligent creatures will use. This lair has it's own portal which means you are independent of finding portals to a certain degree. I thourougly enjoyed the gameplay. In dk 2 I had the problem that the levels became very tedious after a while. Too much repetitive gameplay, too few creatures in a level- fixed by the aforementioned creatures lair and the fact that you can now see how many creatures are attracted to your dungeon on a per room basis. This is absolutely great. Also you can select which creatures you want to receive. No more DK 1/2 problem of having to throw away a dozen of flys because they kept comming and you needed something else. This reduces micromanagement a lot. Don't like your dungeon? Rebuild walls at a small cost in Mana. DK1 had it all big levels, unique creatures, a large enough creature pool per level. In DK 2 The magic system was changed by adding mana which was a very good move but the pool of creatures was too small which meant - attract creatures - advance a little - lose a lot of creatures - repeat. This is fixed. No repetitiveness. Enough gold and magic to create gold from the beginning. You will never run out of gold in the levels but the mechanic isn't overpowered either. And an integrated map editor lets you build your own levels. Something I always enjoy in games. In conclusion: I cannot stress enough how much improved the gameplay is over DK2 - something I miss very much in most modern games is good gameplay. The newly added features make all the difference, I loved both dk 1 and dk 2 but never finished dk 2 because of a lack of control and the repetitiveness of the gameplay. I am not very far into the campaign of War for the Overworld but I can already tell that this is a very different and fun experience for me. And I will finish this one. So much improvement. I like i alot better. Thank you!
