Help! Everyone has been teleported away randomly! As the heroic Captain Viridian, it's up to you to find your friends, bring them back to safety, and save the universe!

VVVVVV is a platform game all about exploring one simple mechanical idea - what if you reversed gravity instead of jumping?

The game is designed not to artificially gate your progress. In VVVVVV there are no locks, no power-ups, no switches, nothing to stop you progressing except the challenges themselves.

Key features:

  • Elegant, minimalistic level design.
  • Challenging, fast and fun gameplay.
  • Frequent checkpoints mean you never have to replay challenges you've already beaten.
  • Over half an hour of chiptune music by composer Magnus Pålsson.
  • Special game modes, including time trials and a no death mode.
  • A powerful and easy to use level editor for creating your own dimensions to explore.

Frustrating yet enjoyable

I like this game, the graphics are good, the music is well done, and it has some solid platforming. It has an interesting for of game progression in that you have the whole world there and you explore wherever you want at your leisure. The flipping mechanic is an interesting one, which is utilised very well here. However. First, it's a bit short, but it's relatively cheap so that's not a big issue. Ther biggest problem I have is with the controls. Most of my deaths came as a result of how the character moves, which is incredibly slippery. Level design requires precision platforming including stopping on narrow ledges, and the way momentum works on the character makes it far more difficult than it should be. Fighting the controls just makes the game really frustrating at times. That's what caused me to knock off two stars, as it's a fundamental issue here. Outside of that, well, yeah it's a good game. I did ultemately like exploring around the world the devs created, and that was the fun part of it.

Highly addictive gameplay and music

I was highly skeptical of this game at first. The sensibilities, art style and music all reminded me of those old pixellated gems that used to drive me crazy and hone my skills. It couldn't possibly come close to that nostalgic feeling, or surpass it. Happily, I couldn't have been more wrong. The graphics are fluid and smooth as butter as you flip and whip your way through increasingly difficult areas. The music is very expressive for a chiptune-alike soundtrack, and succeeds at matching the atmosphere and difficultly of the level you play. This has the added bonus of encouraging you to keep at the hair-tearing sections. Some may call the story too simple, but it still makes you laugh when you feel like you shouldn't. It pokes fun at its own simplicity and brings us all along for the ride. If you have even a tiny bit of 8-bit nostalgia, or wish you had had it, this game will make you very happy.

Challenging, yet forgiving platformer

‘VVVVVV’ is not the type of game that I’d play normally. I’ve seen it on digital game store fronts many times, but paid little heed to it. But for one reason or another -- I don’t recall what it is now -- I recently took a closer look at this game. The attractive sale price certainly swayed me to give it a try, and I was pleasantly surprised by its balance of simple gameplay mechanics and thought-provoking platforming puzzles. In this game, you play as Captain Viridian, who is on a mission to locate your scattered crew members. While you don’t have any weapons or the ability to jump to help you negotiate the treacherous terrains, you can flip the direction of gravity. This special ability alone separates ‘VVVVVV’ from many other platforming games, demanding players to solve platforming puzzles in different ways. ‘VVVVVV’ is a game that requires well-timed, precise movements, and quick reflexes. Despite that, it’s also a forgiving game. There are plenty of checkpoints at which you can respawn after one of hundreds, if not thousands, deaths you’ll likely encounter on your first playthrough. As impossible as some puzzles may seem at first, you know there’s a solution that will get you from one end of the screen to another. Thankfully, there are accessibility options that can make the game easier. These include game speed adjustments and an invincibility mode. If at any point you get overwhelmed or impatient with a puzzle, you can tweak the game temporarily to help you proceed. Challenge seekers may scoff at these options, but they do make this game more appealing to casual gamers. ‘VVVVVV’ is fun indie game that will take about 2 to 3 hours to complete, and more if you seek additional challenges, collect all trinkets, or explore all areas of the map. It’s not a game that I’d expect myself to enjoy, but I did, and enough to recommend it. It’s definitely worth checking out, especially when it goes on sale.

Refreshing

Some of the ideas here were so creative and interesting that I was smiling while playing. One of the best games I've played all year. Music is awesome, visuals are perfect. Can't think of one thing wrong with this game.

A Short but very Sweet Platformer

VVVVV's greatest strength is it's focus on the level design. All the rooms in the game are crafted to make full use of the simple, albeit tight and responsive controls, and has mechanics that compliment them. The few music tracks in game also helps, with all of them fitting the situation you're in. The game is short though, clocking in at around 2 hours, but the scattered collectibles throughout the game's map, with some of them having some of the hardest challenges in already hard game, however I rarely felt game was unfair. Overall a great time. Pros: -Good controls -Fantastic Level design -Great Music -Decent Replay Value -Challenging, but rarely unfair Cons: -Lasts about 2 Hours -Could've benefited from more music tracks -A few unfair moments I would definitely recommend VVVVV to any fan of platformers.
