Enjoyable, but left a lot to be desired

I love the idea of using a camera to take snapshots of the world around in order to manipulate both the environment and objects within to solve puzzles, and it was executed passably here. The art style and environments are beautiful, but can get somewhat samey after a while, but they sufficiently characterize each section to somewhat reflect the personality of the central figure for each hub. The game does not overstay its welcome, but the puzzles for the most part left much to be desired. Not to say that they were poorly constructed, but I was repeatedly left feeling like I'd finally completed a tutorial section, looking forward to what other interesting puzzles they'd made utilizing the introduced mechanics only for the area to be over with no further difficulty or complexity to be had. There are many ways to use the level geometry or the camera to access portions of the map that are ostensibly not part of the puzzle at hand, but it was still a little bit disappointing that in none of these places were there any sort of secrets. The secrets/collectibles that are present for the most part are hard to miss if you take time to walk around and explore each level a bit instead of going straight to solving the puzzles. The story was nothing particularly special but the characters inside and the voice acting kept me intrigued enough to go looking for other tidbits of information about them. I do like how it feels like you're seeing small slices of this group of people over a large amount of time. All in all, I quite enjoyed my time with this game, and my main gripes all sort of boil down to, I want more. More complex puzzles, more hidden secrets, more expansion on mechanics, more insight into the characters' dynamics with one another, just more of almost everything. It's well worth the time but for someone who plays a lot of puzzle games, you may come out somewhat underwhelmed.

Novel Game Mechanic

Viewfinder introduces a new game mechanic that I have not seen before. Think something a la the Portal gun. Here you are manipulating the space around you using 2D images that become 3D. The game does well with its progression of puzzles for the most part but there are a few points that force you to think out of the box. In the end, it left me wanting more and intricate/difficult puzzles and I think there is a lot of room for growth. I hope to see a Viewfinder 2 in the same way that Portal 2 took the Portal gun concept and greatly expanded on it. The story is well thought out, and the voice acting is well done. Visually, the game is a winner. Overall, would definitely recommend.

A unique mechanic that plays great

Viewfinder is a 3D indie puzzle adventure game with the unique mechanic of being able to remodel the environment using photographs. The game uses this hook very creatively in its varied puzzles and expands upon these mechanics inventively throughout the about 10 hours it takes to complete it if you want to get all achievements like me. There are also various collectibles and secrets scattered around if you like to explore, with several being very creative and fun to discover, including some easter eggs. The beautiful visuals and serene music create a relaxing feel when playing the game and it even has a cat-like creature you can pet if that wasn't enough. The story is simple but nice enough although it's very clearly the unique gameplay that is the star here. I wish they'd pushed the mechanics even further and made a more conclusive story as the ending is fine but it could have been better. The voice acting is hit and miss, with several of the main companions being over-acted but the supporting cast having more fitting voice acting but this is overall a minor quibble. Overall, the amazing puzzles built off the game's unique mechanic combined with the serene gameplay feel make this game a must-play, highly recommended!
