Fun. Not a simulation. Some rough edges
I would recommend this game to World of Warships fans who want to boss a whole squadron around. Also the same fans who want to be able to pause, accelerate time, and slow it down again. Also, if you liked Sid Meier's Pirates, but think it would be better if you replaced the trading with submarines and the swordfights with aircraft carriers, this might be for you. It's not the prettiest game in the world, but the graphics get the job done quite well. The campaign mode is not a naval career simulator, it's wandering the map making money for sinking ships and unlocking better ships and buying them. The battles are challenging, and torpedos are critical to the whole thing. The good news is that the enemy AI is quite bad at dodging torpedos (at least on Normal difficulty) and so it's possible to have some really satisfying adventures in a submarine or similar. The bad news is that the friendly AI is quite bad at dodging torpedos, and the enemy AI is not shy about launching them. There's a whole skill to learn in terms of using the camera and making sure that enemy torpedo attacks don't exterminate your entire fleet. (Now that I feel like I'm getting better at it, I'm rather pleased with myself.) There are a few annoyances, and a few things that don't quite make sense at first. And I rather wish the game had told me that I could rebuild a sunken ship for a fraction of the purchase price BEFORE I reloaded my game and played that battle again and again... All told, I picked this up on sale and am very satisfied with it.
