Finished after 10 years

On paper its a very good game. Good/decent music, story, loot sytem. progression, graphics etc. Almost everything is above avarage. Buut.. i just could never get into this one. Started countless times to play but i always got distracted by other games. A few times lost saves due to dying computers, when i could recover my saves i felt lost and had to start over. After 10+ years i managed to finish the main game.. haven't started DLCs yet but looking at my track record it would require at least five more years so here i'm writing a rewiew. Why i could never get into this game? Fist of all i managed to identify the biggest reason this last playtrough: I don't care about the characters at all! They don't feel alive , their motivations doesn't interest me. I care about victor vran only as far as "mow all demons" way . Because there is no char costomization i'm just not that invested in him. Level design plays a big role too. its fragmanted where you can play any opened stage whenever you want. You can complete challenges, find secrets and later do bounties or stuff.. its just too many things to do. i care most about the secrets but after a while i noticed i'm just trying to find secrets and not interested in any other content at all. Cohesion between different parts of game suffers a lot. Another paragraph just for the crafting.. the weekest part probably. To get highest tier items you have to use a load of resources and end up probably something useless to you. Its an above avarage game overall but the hooks to keep you invested keep missing the mark for me. Its a constant list of things to do on a checklist where you decide which one to do fist. After a while it feels more like a chore list. Controller is iffy as well while in combat i don't need to break barrels thank you game devs. Better games out there , worse games out there.

Victor Vran and his Fabulous Hat

At first glance Victor Vran is a typical Action RPG game, you roam the world killing monsters, looting their bodies, earning XP to level your character etc. However it manage to add some innovating concepts, one is that the game has eight types of weapons and all of them functions differently and each have two alternate fire modes. This add more depth to the combat as each weapons is effective against different types of monsters and as their behavior and the damage they inflict isn't merely a function of their stats. Another gameplay mechanic we don't see often in ARPG is the ability to dodge roll and jump, not only does it sometime make navigating the level easier it also add a new dynamic to the combat as you will need those abilities to survive in battle and I find that they add much to the combat and make it more fun than other ARPG games. Each area in the game world has its own five challenges, usually involve killing monsters in a certain way, this add much to the replayability of the levels and after you complete the game story you will unlock additional five elite challenges for each area. The existence of a narrator also add to break the routine of the game, he will occasionally make sarcastic and insulting remarks toward Victor Vran and sometime just try to mislead him as to what direction he need to go. The abilities to customize your character is extremely limited, there is only one class of character that you could play (monster hunter) and when you level your character you have no choice as to how it will developed (usually you will get extra HP or more destiny points). The only way for you to determine the abilities of your character is by choosing what outfit he will wear and what destiny cards you want to equip. While I can understand the motive to this decision, the developers try to create a more focused on combat than character development, I do think they make a mistake to dispense altogether with the whole development tree system.

Gamepad fun.

Alot of top down games sadly are point and click, they hold little interest for me. However Victor Vran is a real action RPG that when played with a gamepad is one of the most fun games out in 2015. If Diablo 3 and Path of Exile let me use a gamepad they too could have been fun. You play as Victor and roam around killing Skeleton, Spiders and other enemies with a variety of melee and range weapons. Combat is what makes the game. The story is ok and the maps are large and worth exploring. The graphics are fine and will ruin on most systems. The narration to the story has humour and even pokes fun at players. All is good in a surprise hit. Pros.. Combat and controls are excellent. Graphics and story are good. Maps are large. Enemies have different methods of attack. Melee weapons are great. Cons... Ranged weapons are limited. Ranged weapons have no twin stick aiming which would make them more receptive to use. The main character could have had more outfits to wear. 8.5/10....A great fun action RPG best played with my Xbox 360 gamepad.

A hidden GEM.

Honestly the most fun I have ever had on an ARPG. The combat is amazing an unique for this style of game and i love it!! bright beautiful world that looks and feels well polished. Voice acting for characters is A grade. And the game style, art and construction feel like a labor of love:) Enough ranting, GO BUY THE GAME! and find out for yourself what a treasure it is.

One of the best aRPGs out there

Can't really get more action than an RPG like this. Many customization possibilities to be the hunter of your choice. Engine is really solid and made for the best performance on any machine. And having chance to rock out with Motörhead DLC is just the cherry on top!
