To become death in Venetica is a calling, fulfilled by a man of flesh and blood – equipped with special supernatural skills in order to be able to carry out the duties of the office. A new death is selected regularly by “Corpus”, a secret council. This time however Corpus really makes a wrong decision: The “new” death, Victor, turns out to be a crazed necromancer who manages to turn himself into an overpowering undead with seedy tricks and dark rituals and thus attains almost unlimited power in addition to immortality. As it is strictly forbidden for the chosen death to devote himself to necromancy, the committee revokes Victor’s nomination immediately and declares a new death in his stead without delay.
The power-hungry Victor however does not want to relinquish his position again. He continues to practice the dark arts in order to gather numerous dark and dangerous creatures and tainted souls from the underworld around him. He thus succeeds in eliminating the newly designated death and takes over his power for his own purposes. The effects on the world’s balance are calamitous and – should Victor be able to keep himself in power – its dark consequences are irreversible. Only a person who has the same mighty powers as Victor can prevent his prevailing and vent him his deserved punishment.
Scarlett, the daughter of the real death does not know anything about her ancestry and the hidden talents which slumber within her. She is immersed suddenly in this story due to the brutal attack on her home village and the tragic loss of Benedict, the love of her life. It is a story which she now begins to write herself, a story during the course of which she unleashes her capabilities, a story in which she tries to save Benedict from the world of the dead and a story in which she must protect the world of the living from the dark threat posed by Victor and his henchmen.

Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
I wasn't knowing this game, and i had 3 Euro left to use, at -75% i take it without conviction...
Since i have bought this game i play Venetica.
What a great game, of course there is no graphic like Hellblade: Senua's sacrifice or Witcher 3 (both good and on GOG), the control are a bit aged, BUT there is a wonderfull gameplay.
Some compared it to Fable or Prince of persia... it is different but share the same ingredient: Once you start you get addicted to the game in few min.
Clearly the best buy of the month.
Thanks to GOG for making this free for a short time. Did not expect to have fun with a game this old and janky.
What I liked:
- female main character is likeable
- the semi open world is a good break from other bigger open world games like Skyrim
- graphics, movement and combat reminded me of Gothic 1
- the Venice city level looked great
- simple combat that is good for casual players like me
- unlimited storage of items (no need to worry about encumberance)
- voiced lines sound ok
- low system requirements
- free! (during giveaway)
What I didn't like:
- city felt empty
- no way to sort inventory
- could not figure out how to make potions
- no fast travel and no way to run faster makes backtracking a chore
- boss fights are frustrating until you figure out trick to beat them
- some game crashes until I finally activated Windowed mode
Venetica is an entertaining third-person action and role-playing game. With an appealing story, a simple fighting style and very entertaining. Its graphic section is a little rough sometimes, but beautifully done. It has a peculiar battle and fighting system that is very entertaining and easy to learn. In short, Venetica is a great game for those who want to start with this kind of genre for the first time. With a good story and some humor, Venetica will show you a good time. Recommended.
I don't remember if I had it as a giveaway or if it caught my curiosity and bought it on a whim, but I fell in love with this game I knew nothing about before getting it.
The gameplay is simple, console like which for me is a plus coming from that background, a bit of RPG character growth, beautiful, pleasant to explore environments as it's set in a fictional Venice, not too difficult yet challenging at times, not too long or too short. It's comfort food or cozy gaming for me, one of those games one could go back to from time to time and play again and it could be what you are looking for as well.
For the record, it runs flawlessly out of the box on my Linux PC and on Deck.
I own 411 GoG games, a few dozen games for each console (PS, Xbox), twenty or so on Steam....More than I can ever play. I have to be choosy in where to spend my gaming time, espcially since I'm past my prime. This game is a pleasure with a capital P to play. The top reviewer has it right, it probably shouldn't be, but it is.
The way I enjoy it is hard to explain. Here is how it makes me feel, from the very start: I can imagine it as how I would day dream my hero would act.The world responds like I think my day dream could if I was that imaginative. I can overhear conversations, sometimes very long ones, that carry good information that I could interrupt. It ISN"T about realism like real world stuff (you can do the time honored aggro of mobs and pull them and the others standing there don't mind ). But enough is there it seems like the world is real (even if the interaction with it is game like).
It reminds me a lot of how the first Tomb Raider was, with Laura Croft kicking butt and solving puzzles. The puzzles and quests in this game aren't chores to be completed. They are interesting and fun. Most games I play, have quests that just aren't that interesting or fun, even if I do it for the rewards. These quests are sewn seemlessly into the narrative that makes it so natural I don't even realize it.
**Don't alt-tab out of the game until you save. I save the game then alt-tab to the desk top. 91 percent of the time, I can go right back to gaming. Other times the game has hung and I restart. ** I see this in the big money games like Witcher, so I'm not sure what the complaint is on this game, but the voice acting doesn't match the script 'slightly', sometimes. **I haven't come accross any other bugs. I haven't finished the game yet, so maybe latter on?
Not every person will love this game. I don't know of anything much that everyone can agree on. But in my view, this game has earned its 4.5 verified owners rating.
