Description
Vaporum is a grid-based, single-player & single-character dungeon crawler RPG seen from the first person perspective in an original steampunk setting. Inspired by old-school games like Dungeon Master I and II, the Eye of the Beholder series, and the most recent Legend of Grimrock I and II. Stranded in the middle of an ocean, in front of a gigantic tower, the hero has to find out what the place is, what happened there, and most importantly, who he is. Combat takes place in real time. Each enemy has a distinctive set of strengths and weaknesses so you have to employ different tactics to beat each one. Weapon types have each a set of unique bonuses and behaviors which adds more depth and thought when choosing what weapons to equip.

You will find many types of gadgets: direct attacks, area attacks, offensive & defensive buffs... These gadgets are powerful, but some enemies are immune to certain types of attacks, so you will have to figure out the best way to deal with every encounter the game throws at you. Solve intriguing puzzles and level-wide objectives where you have to use both your wits and reflexes. While most puzzles and riddles are contained in a single room, progression objectives can span an entire level or even multiple levels. Instead of increasing the abilities of your human character, you will improve an exoskeleton rig you wear. The game combines a "you are what you wear" aspect with a long-term development of your exo-rig. The gadget-based system allows you change your loadout of gadgets at any time, giving you a great deal of flexibility to deal with various situations. On the other hand, as you progress, you get to unlock useful circuits on your exo-rig, gaining significant permanent attribute bonuses and passive skills. Stranded on a small islet in the middle of an ocean, you enter a gigantic mechanical tower. Nothing makes sense to you, but it is all strangely familiar...

If you want to get into the backstory and uncover the mysteries of the tower, you can delve right into it by reading all the notes you can find. Don't worry, though, you can safely ignore all the text. All major story points are narrated by the main characters and they are fully voiced!

There are many optional areas in the game that you can choose to explore. They usually present some form of additional challenge, but come with a reward too! The tower is riddled with secret passages that contain unique items and notes of its inhabitants, giving you an insight into their lives and events that precede your arrival.
  • First person real-time combat
  • Puzzles and level-wide objectives
  • Gadget-based RPG system
  • Lots of exploration, loot, and character customization
  • Mysterious storyline filled with secrets
  • Fully voiced main characters
  • Immersive steampunk setting

Decent clone but way too simple

This game will surelty scratch your itch for that grid based old school dungeon crawling, it is a grimrock clone and a decent one. But honestly it feels botched, very simplistic maps and puzzles, around halfway through the game you get one of your hardest puzzles; press 4 buttons to open 4 doors in the right order... The game barely has any secrets and you dont feel like searching for them. Pretty much every key action you make (open a door/ pull a lever/ push a button) spawn enemies, so it is much more focused on action as on puzzles like grimrock. My main gripe with combat (which happens alot) is that you have only 1 action with your movement, and you cannot use your secondary weapon waiting on the CD, basically removing combat options and dumbing it down to waiting for your 1 CD weapon to reaload while dodging. I kind of expected the game to played that way so i picked a tank class so i can just sit in monsters faces and spam click them, that way i progress faster through the game. TL;DR Buy it if its on sale

Not just a Grimrock clone

It's worse. Clunky controls, gloomy assets (yeah, yeah, I know it's steampunk, but it's so depressing like in horror titles like Soma), lack of mechanics depth (again in comparison with Grimrock). Oh, and enemies are just fast as lightning - and you can't do anything about it. I was really disappointed after playing this title. Grimrock 1&2 are far better than this.

Broken automap

On map there are no marks for teleports or switches. What year do we have? Compare it to Lands of Lore...

Are you kidding me?

GOG, add a ZERO-star rating. Please. While watching the intro sequence I became suspicious: For an experienced (read “old”) gamer like me (with close to 1000 games owned and played, overall) it felt unimaginative, standard. Nothing caught my attention AT ALL. Standard language, standard sound, standard voice acting… EVERYTHING pointed to a few STANDARD-thinking IT guys making a STANDARD game hoping to make the STANDARD amount of money from STANDARD-thinking… consumers OF STANDARD junk. A few seconds later I became even more suspicious, but I hit the Esc key and went to Options. My suspicions turned out to be justified: There is NO mouse-look… in a 3D game. You hit E and Q to snap 90 degrees left or right, and you scroll sideways or forward/backwards with WSAD. Hmmm. BUT I DIGRESS: Perhaps there is a story somewhere there (which I doubt based on the quality of the Intro). And, while I am old school, I’ve seen a good number of modern games (say, 30-50) and the movement mechanics of Vaporum make me want to say to the developers – NEXT TIME MAKE A POINT-AND-CLICK adventure game if you want to “tell a story”. Make a graphic novel or something.
