With mods this game is ultra cool, but the one thing that kept bugging me is that Vukodlak name of your vampire lord enemy literally means Werewolf which makes no sense :P
its not a review, so don't take it seriously. I'll just say this.
Its funny that a vampire lord is named Vukodlak, which I believe any Slavic language speaking person knows that Vukodlak means Werewolf
First of all, you are aware that this is a 20 year old game right?
If you're expecting modern graphics, modern gameplay and and modern anything then obviously you're not going to like this game.
This was made back when games were sold physically. That meant that this had to be a full package. When you hop in the game, there is no handholding whatsoever, no in-game tutorial or handholding. Why is that? Because as I mentioned the game was meant to be sold as a physical copy. It comes with a manual! (Its in the game directory, along with some wallpapers and avatars)
So yes, you're gonna have to read the manual. Trust me its worth the read!
Not only does the manual teach you about the game, but it also comes with a series of short stories and comics to give you some backstory on your character as well as the world they inhabit.
Gameplay
The game might seem pretty straight forward. Go to the objective. Cutscene. Attack enemies until they die. Rinse and repeat.
But if you look at your character screen you will notice there is an insane amount of skills and stats. All those come into play. How would you know this?
BY READING THE MANUAL!
Seriously. Read it.
Graphics
Its a 20 year old game. I don't know what you're expecting. BUT!
There are some grahipcal mods out there to pretty up the game that are faily easy to install.
By fairly easy, I mean you download it and copy paste it into the game directory.
If you don't know how to do that, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't even know how you managed to find your way here to read my review since it takes more computer literacy to get to this review section.
Sound
The voice acting is hilarious.
All I have to say is "NAY! NAAAAYYYY!!"
You'll laugh when you get there too.
All in all
Is it a perfect game? lol no, hell no.
But is it one of the better games of its era. Absoloutely!
If you're into Vampire The Masquerade, this is a must play.
When the game came out back in 2020 i tried it, but didn't spend too much time - i was 14 years old and the lack of proper tutorial kinda ruined the experience for me
So 20 years later i bought the game from GOG and gave it a try. It's a nice action RPG with interesting (even if plain) story, good combat system and nice setting (never tried the board game, but really like Bloodlines). The game is good, but have a lot of flaws.
Pros:
- the graphics were great for it's time
- good story
- good even if limited sound and music design. The voice actiong is also great (for a game from 2020)
- nice combat system
- almost unlimited choise of blood disciplines (compared to Bloodlines)
- a bit of humor in the dialogue
Cons:
- bad camera
- some bugs, too often one or more members of my coterie were not able to go through certain doors without manual help. I also ended freezed in a wall few times in my play
- short, took me 20 hours to finish it with a lot of restarts and just wandering around to find some doors/switches (so it could be a lot less if walkthrough is used)
- extremelly linear, no side-quests
- most of the many blood disciplines are useless, two or three of them are overpowered (even the last boss is helpless against prison of ice)
- poor choise of weapons. After you find the only magic sword in the game, you won't use anything else, and this is hapening at 1/3 of the story
- some of the stats your characters can raise during the level up are useless, in fact you really need like 3 out of 9 (4 if you want to cheese the game and have unlimited money)
I want to like this game, because of how much I loved Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.......but this game kind of sucks. If you are looking for a time-sink, can get lost in story-line, and really like old games from this era, maybe try it. Otherwise skip it.
The atmosphere is great. The story line is OK. The game-play is terrible.
The atmosphere is good enough to where it is spooky and puts you on edge, which is needed because the graphics can be comical at times. They do a good job there.
The story line is....OK, but I didn't make it through the entire game and was starting to lose interest. The characters and voice acting are good. =)
The mechanics of what the F is actually going on with the game is obfuscated. You really have no clue what anything means in the game. Should you put points into strength or dex? I don't know, it doesn't seem to matter. Sometimes I waylay things straight up, other times I am feckless. Sometimes I take down hordes of bad guys other times my party gets dropped by one vampire. What is happening? Who knows, there is nothing to let you know what the F is going on under the hood.
Overall, it's a title I wanted to like, I put a good amount of effort into it, but was a chore to play. I just gave up, and that was the right decision.
