Description
As the millenium draws to a close, a malevolent cult of the Fallen lurks in the shadows and sewers of Union City...waiting. Their unholy mission is to fulfill an ancient prophecy of apocalypse. Crime and subversion are their tools to wrest control of the city. Now gangas, hardened criminals, and violent cultists roam the streets looking for trouble to cause. As D’Arci Stern, a tough as nails UCPD rookie cop, you use her martial arts prowess and infiltration skills to unlock the diabolical intentions of the Fallen cult. Her only ally in an unfair fight against criminality is Roper, UCPD informant and ex-Special Forces grunt. Obsessively driven to purge the world of the Fallen menace, Roper speaks softly but carries a big shotgun.

Urban Chaos throws you feet first into the cold, corrupt heart of a modern urban jungle at the turn of the millenium. To succeed you’ll need a deadly combination of stealth, physical agility, and martial arts skills as you interact with the city around you. Complete freedom to explore every area is granted and this freedom extends to gameplay - the future is in your hands as you fight to reclaim your city from the madness of the Fallen cult.
  • Interact with a vast living city teeming with citizens - you can choose to assist NPC's to gain both information and new weapons.
  • Multiple modes of combat and action including hand-to-hand fighting, heavy weaponry attacks, vehicle chases and building shoot-outs.
  • Each street has random event scripting. For one mission, a street may be filled with holiday shoppers. For the next mission, a major gun battle between cops and a gang might be in full swing.

Great ideas, poor execution

Many mention GTA III when mentioning this game and while I admit there's many similarities but there's also a reason why GTA is now a world famous name and Urban Chaos a forgotten one. Graphically, Urban Chaos looks horrible for a 1999 game. I mean, Quake III Arena was released this year. The fact that it was made for the very aging Playstation 1 says it all. The PC release was a joke, too. Without a gamepad it was practically unplayable - the camera was terrible and there was no mouse support. The car handling is frustration and annoying: your car will stop responding for no reason and take seconds to respond again, sliding around corners is impossible since it's like your tires are glued to the ground, etc. etc. In general, the game responds badly - controls are very sloppy and it can get very frustrating when the game doesn't do what you want it to do. You also have to be in the exact spot for the game to do what you want - there's almost zero margin. Summed up, it's a third rate GTA game without the charisma, the brilliant music and great setting. I mean, the game got slammed in the press for the negatives above so why ignore them now? Since then we've been treated to half a dozen games much better than this.

Controls are terrible!

Would be a great game if the controls were better. That and the awful save system sink this game for me. I won't be finishing this game because of too much frustration. Most of the positive reviews here are more about nostalgia. Thanks a lot reviewers. At least I bought this on sale. I gave it 2 stars because the extras are neat (soundtrack mostly).

FIXED

I fixed the black screen problem and found a way to play at high resolutions. There is an Urban Chaos Widescreen Fix patch online. You unpack it, select one of the two folders corresponding to the diagonal of your screen and paste the contents to the game folder. It works for me, and I have Win10 and an invidia card.

As good as it gets

Urban Chaos is overally good game, but there are a few things one has to keep in mind before buying it, 1, The final mission is comlete bull... I strongly advice watching a walkthrough on it, otherwise you will be left without a basic idea what you are supposed to do. 2. There is generally little explanation on your goals and objective locations. Something is right next to you on the map? No, it is not, you have to travel half the town over, find one special palce where you can climb and from there it is a 3-4 minute platforming section to get to your objective. 3. There are no checkpoints and no manual mid-mission saves. If you die you start all over again and somethimes this can be quite frustrating, especially if you die to falling from a ledge, or die due to the cluncky combat controlls (and controls in general). 4. This game did not benefit from having a PS1 version, since it has made the game clunckier that it would have been if it was a straighforward PC game. The good things about this game: 1. Amazing soundtrack 2. Original and highly inspired style of graphics. 3. A story, which even though poorly delivered is still interesting enough to keep you going. 4. A more or less sandboxy levels, which sometimes do and sometimes to not offer you a few ways to solve your problems. It is a game of its time, and that is a late 1990's platformer with some combat involved. I recommend the game, but only to those who are ready to overlook the stated flaws. If you believe the game to sound too frustrating, switch your choice to something else.

Found patch that allowed me to play game

Thus far, I have not encountered the black screen problem that was mentioned previously (or any other glitches), but the game would not even start for me at first: there was no black screen, no error message, nothing, just would not start. So I decided to try to use a patch that allowed me to play Might and Magic 9 recently, and fortunately the same patch allowed me to start up and play Urban Chaos. I visited the following GitHub page: https://github.com/elishacloud/dinputto8 I then downloaded Release v1.0.58.0 and followed the instructions. Specifically, after unzipping the downloaded file, I added the dinput.dll file into the game's installation directory. Now the game starts up properly and is working for me on Windows 10.
