Description
Underrail is an old school isometric turn-based RPG set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of Underrail as they violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

Underrail is really poorly optimize

I tried liking this game. I really did. But after over 50 hours of gameplay, I have to say, I am not enjoying myself. The walls and doors sometimes will not load, making it seem like pavement and walkways (especially in Core City) are floating in a sea of black. The dock areas of Junkyard, SGS, Core city sometimes get laggy for no reason; giving me 1 to 2 frames per second. And the entire camp Hathor would hang and lag, probably because it’s one big dock. And the “Error: Zone Transition failed.” I get! God, I get like 8 or 9 of “Error: Zone Transition failed.” a day, after which I’ll have to load the autosave. And sometimes, after I get “Error: Zone Transition failed.” and I try to load the autosave, I get “Error: Failed to load the save game.” After which I have to quit the game and load it back up in order to load the save. The railroading (the pun is not lost on me) once you join the (spoiler) at the university is even worse. You can’t tell anyone who is coming. No matter what you do or who you join doesn’t matter at the university; even if you choose to kill everyone. You’d think that you could use your comms to tell Schteff what you see and tell him to save himself, or Georgis and Octavia (I told Eidein I needed to do something and ran off to tell Georgis and Octavia to get out, but I can’t do anything except buy stuff and tell them T(spoiler) guide them). The worldcrafting is interesting though. But it's hard to appreciate it when the world is freezing and lagging at 1 frame a second randomly. And Crawlers; oh God. I had to play a new character because I couldn’t detect them no matter what, and I still couldn’t see them with my perception at 12. They’ll always hit you and stun you. I ended up just buying antidotes and just ignoring them as they take chunks of me until they just stand and fight, or blocking sections with psi-forcefields. I’m not sure if this is a game engine problem or a PC problem, but I’m not getting a new computer to find out.

A veteran player's impression

First off: Underrail made it to my list of goof games, whatever else I've got to say for or against it. Three stars is a bit of a "cautious" rating - I'm still about to give it another shot with the Expedition expansion. That's after a long pause however, so despite some commitment for my first run it kinda ran dry and had me quit. That's with just the base game - w/o the expansion. The character system is rich and deep and rewards truly getting familiar with it. It pays if You are one of the guys that sit over their character sheet for an hour, checking out possible feats You might be able to take eight levels later. For me that's a plus, but it might not be everybody's cup of tea. In my own experience, throwing myself into dominating difficulty from the start against better advice on the forums, the extreme levels of difficulty are too heavily pointing towards reloading. Time and time again. A trap doesn't "cause an uncomfortable amount of damage and costs a consumable", no: It simply kills You. That's no longer any "gameplay" to speak of. I can deal with it alright - I'll learn where the trap is and stay clear. That's not too difficult. Only that's not a trap really, more of an annoying invisible wall I have to learn by heart - and by reloading. Save scumming is too close at hand. It kills any and all pacing, all drama, all soul. This is not a worst case, but it definitely isn't an ideal TYPE of difficulty. Add loads of text and You have a sluggish game with a lot of great atmosphere and lore that is being sucked dry by tedious gameplay. Perhaps I am being unfair mind: The simple solution would be to do Yourself the favor to NOT play dominating on Your 1st playthrough (although I did get the impression that it is possibly with greater tenacity). I for one will go and give it another shot with "Expedition" installed and perhaps then give it a 4th star, since that's never been far away to begin with. The fifth star is probably out of reach though.

Good experience

An soulful game that respects your time by laying down rules before you at the very start. It's tough, it's gritty and at times has some "gamer moments" but at the same time it's just learning experience. Considering the "fun for buck" aspect - it's just insane how much of the "game" you can get out of it even without completionist approach and with only one run. Good ride with its own quirks for a decent price.

Good, but unforgiving

Well, a couple of replays later and many hours sunk into it, I still keep falling out (pun intended) with Underrail. TL;DR: It is a good game, so if you're not fussed, read a build guide and how to use it in combat. It will save you a lot of hassle. To be clear: I cannot fault the overall theme, setting, and most of the writing. It is a *very* well crafted universe, the maps are diverse and full of different characters and monsters. The alternate XP system is great, but also try classic - you just know where you stand when killing monsters and doing quests. Gameplay balance is where it breaks for me. There are a lot of "wrong" ways to spec a character. If you do not balance the right skills and pick the right feats, you get to a point in the game and you just can't progress without some major change. Like my first plays of Fallout, sometimes you just have to start over - and there was a few too many of those. I do prefer "normal" to not repeatedly penalise me for not making a min-max protagonist. After maybe my 5th redo, the magic of exploration was waning, and I just wanted to get to the next part of the story.
