Description
You are the Avatar, the most noble of heroes. In your day, you have beheld many wonders and proved yourself master of many dungeons. But nothing in your experience prepared you for this: the terror-filled passages of Britannia’s underworld. In this epic adventure you, the Avatar, join the leaders of Britannia in Lord British’s castle for an evening of celebration to commemorate the defeat of the Guardian’s forces a year ago. Suddenly, the Guardian strikes again, encasing the building in a gigantic blackrock gem. He offers the imprisoned heroes a simple choice: proclaim him ruler of all Britannia, or starve while his minions conquer the land. Can you free Lord British and save Britannia?

Old, but perfect RPG

Ultima Underworld is amazing game. It was the first really 3D game released. And it is most interesting game in all Ultima series. Music, story, quests: everything is made perfectly. Unfortunatly you dont see such games today. It runs in DOSBOX emulator in this release. Here are some tips for you to play this game with best experience on modern system. 1. Configure DOSBOX to use MT-32 for MIDI. Install Munt to emulate it. This way you will listen to much better music, then SB16 can produce. 2. Mouse can lag in game, I have changed default mouse sensitivity in DOSBOX config to 200. 3. Dont know why, but GOG release some old CD version of UW. So you need to patch it to latest version found here http://ultimacodex.com/archive/ftp/patches/uw1fix.zip (And ftp://ftp.ea.com/pub/patches/uw2patch.exe for UW2) You have to put patched version of exe into game.gog, which is ISO image actually. This is essential step, since you will be hit by famous inventory bug otherwise. 4. I have found, that changing default DOSBOX renderer in config file to "super2xsai" impoves picture much. Also you can try other renderers. Have fun!

Old-school manual-needed kind of game, but quite good

This is one of those games that you can't quite play effectively without guides or manuals. I loved it at the time, nothing else I had seen was quite like it, and I can't downvote it. Even though battles are a bit repetitive and you can repeat charge, thrust, backpedal all day for 90% of the combat, it still has some open-endedness and exploring to it the just somehow draws you in. Some old-school features that make it a bit annoying to play: * Food is needed, light sources are needed. Both are consumable. You can generate both with spells before too long into the game or buy them for cheap, but it is a bit repetitive keeping up with that. * Spell system: put two or three runes in your slots and then cast. There is no hotkey for switching spells around or other easy way to select old spells you already know. You just have to fumble around with runes on the side in advance, and sometimes there's a minimum range requirement, meaning you can't really fireball a whole lot anyway. * Level-up system requires you to find a shrine and chant a mantra. These mantras are best looked up from a FAQ, but they can also be learned in-game if you just happen to wander to the right place. If you explore the entire massive world you'll eventually find all of them, but you have to read guides to get an in-depth description of what each one actually does, anyway. So... kind of fun for an in-depth game you play if you don't mind consulting guides a lot. There's a ton of exploring, and you can level entire towns with your rage if you feel like it; (it's only hard the first time, and then you loot everyone and gain four levels and then you can just stomp everyone for the rest of the game). But it's more rewarding to discover and complete quests. This game has a pretty big nostalgia factor going for it in most reviewer cases, but I sorta have to implore the rest of you to give it a fair try. It's the gogiest gog that ever goged on GOG, I swear.

Rose coloured glasses....

I'm probably going to be stoned to death for this but I was disappointed when I started to play this, the interface is clumsy, the movement controls infuriating (and unmappable) and overall not standing up to the hype other reviewers have given it. Don't get me wrong - When these FIRST came out I loved them, warts and all. They were well ahead of their time in content and ambition (I loved the rune based magic system) - I actually bought my 1st PC JUST to play Underworld1. Its just I don't think they have aged well and I can no longer forgive the clumsy controls. So 5 Stars for nostalgia 3 Stars playability

A new player's perspective in 2020

When I decided to make this my first Ultima, I was expecting to come across a clunky hard to play experience but that was not the case at all. Sure this isn't as smooth as the litany of games that were inspired by Underworld but navigating and interacting in this 3d dungeon is quite simple. Ultima Underworld is a game of methodical exploration where taking notes on your map is necessary to survive the depths. I got sucked into this immersive dungeon simulator and found a lot to love beyond the lesson in video game history playing such an influential game was.

Get em before they’re gone!

Not much I can add that others haven’t already covered. Ultima Underworld and its sequel are some of the most important games ever developed, and paved the way for first person games and immersive sims. This original predates Wolfenstein 3D and allowed players to look up and down years before Dark Forces. Ultima Underworld is so ahead of its time that it allows a level of interactivity seldom seen even today. Get these classics before they’re delisted!
