A breakthrough
Who is telling this game is sh*t, you're not from 80s, when such great movies like Terminator rise, your imagnation is just blown by the government & your conservative parents. This game is build for genies & if you didn't get it to the end, you're not worth it.

Dont know why this game is so hated...
I bought this game here in the Czech Republic when it came out and it was my first Ultima game after Ultima Underworld. I quite liked it but I had a very weak PC thosedays so I wasnt able to play the game very well. Now I think it would not be such a problem for most of us :) Still the game has a very good story, nice graphic and excellent voice work and although it is quite a linear journey with only a couple of side quest I would reccomned it to the fans of the genre. It is definitelly not a rubbish as some people try to suggest!

"Unreasonably" hated.
Ultima IX gets an insane ammount of flak due to a fair ammount of retconing, but at the end of the day, thats its only real flaw. If you hold the story of Ultima franchise very dear to heart (it's not something to write home about really, the continuity of the series is pretty horrid as is, and the retconing happened even before the infamous IX), then you definitely should avoid this entry, but if you enjoy an open and somewhat different take on Action Adventure/RPG genre, i can easily recommend Ultima IX.
