Description
Prepare to embark on the final adventure in Ultima--the best selling role-playing saga of all time that has nurtured generations of gamers. Answer the call and return to Britannia for your last epic quest. As the heroic Avatar, only you can save Lord British and his people from the evil Guardian who has devastated and corrupted the land. Valiant combat, magical prowess, and knowledge of the eight virtues are your weapons against evil in Ultima IX: Ascension.

The ninth installment of the Ultima series takes a leap into a vivid, detailed 3D environment that adds a whole new level of interaction to the exploration of the realm. Britannia was always one of the most life-like, well-developed, king-sized virtual lands, but this new perspective makes the experience of “living” in it much more immersive. The combination of a story of epic proportions, solid mechanics--true to the classic cRPG spirit, and that achingly familiar Ultima setting, Ultima IX: Ascension a memorable title that all role-players should experience for themselves.

Ascend to the realm of myth and legend in the final single-player Ultima game!

To Buy, or not to buy.

For true fans of the ultima Series, this was the greatest slap in the face possible. Not only was Canon ignored, but ruined as memorable characters were defiled, plot points from previous games ignored save for some, the character becoming absolutely dim witted even as he experiences things in the game then ignoring them later on, and the very ending of the preceding ultima title being forgotten. If you played any other ultima game, this one was EA's way of saying "Screw the canon, make us money." And it showed as Richard Garriot's vision was lost back in Ultima 7. But... Looking BEYOND the Ultima lable, it IS a decent game for the time. Aside from the bugs, and crashprone nature of it back when it was released, it was worth an investment to check out the new technology, and it was fun to explore the world. Some quests were crap, and the game was linear and repeated the same brigands, rats, spiders, and idiotic NPCs attempting to fight the Avatar with their bare fists, but it was worth it for a laugh or two. Is it a good ultima game? No. Is it a good game at all? No. But, it isn't a bad "Game" considering the era, and the new technologies. And all the "what's a Paladin?" and "I'm not entirely sure..." jokes only serve as a reminder of a fanbase that was forgotten at the end of a long road. P.S. Will all Spoony fans stop. Yes, his reviews did detail how bad the game was. But, his review was focused more or less on the storyline. I love Spoony. Spoony got me into doing my own Lets Play series. But I watched the same review as you all. It showed how bad the game's tie ins, story, and some glitches, bugs, and crashes were. but it did not showcase enough of the game to get a good idea. It was an excellent review, but it serves best to Ultima fans, not those who do not hold the series to their heart.

Average game, not an Ultima.

The game is not good but not as bad as they say either - plot is so so but still, gameplay is nothing exceptional but I have fond memories of some creative use of magic and a world design which - while not good at all - wasn't too bad either. Just pretend it isn't part of the Ultima series - doesn't fit the canon, continuity errors, etc.

What's a Paladin?

This game remains a slap in the face to every fan of the series - anyone who tells you differently is selling something.

Ultima? In Name Only.

Ok, so this is what happens when game designers are hit on the head with an anvil and suffer amnesia that makes for so many great sitcoms. Previous installments of Ultima are pretty much ignored in Ultima IX. Yes you play the Avatar, yes the cities and land remain the same, and yes, there is even a bloke named Lord British. But that is about it. This is definitely a watered down version of the earlier installments. So, for those of you that hold the Ultima Mythos as canon, this will be a huge disappointment. If your still with me, then this game is truly a guilty pleasure. The 3D environments, while dated, were quite nice at the time. The voice work is definitely AAA and has just a hint of cheese in it. The story, while not revolutionary, is decent and easy enough to follow. The characters are decent, if not enthralling. It is well worth the price point, and makes for a nice night of RPG Gaming.
