Description
In the seventh installment of the Ultima series you — the Avatar — must go back to Britannia and investigate a series of strange events. Two hundred years have passed since your last visit and much has changed since then. An unknown being who calls himself the Guardian has appeared and is forcing everyone to bow to his whims. In addition magic doesn't work as it should, it seems that all of the mages have gone insane, and quiet towns are being terrorized with ritualized murders. It is unclear what is happening, but initial signs point to some kind of organization called the Fellowship. It is up to you to unravel the mystery and find out what is really going on in Britannia.

Ultima 7 is arguably one the best in the series. With enhanced graphics, sound, and controls it was a huge step forward not only for the series, but for the entire RPG genre. The level of immersion was astonishing at the time. Rich environments, wide-ranging dialog trees, and dynamic combat were all masterfully combined by a team that Lord British (Richard Garriott) led to create a game that can't be ignored by any cRPG fan.

One of the real greats

Disclaimer: no matter how much I loved this one, I *never* managed to end it, so I can't comment much on the whole plot or details near the end of the game. That said, this is one of the greats of the genre, likely at the very top for me. From detailed graphics to a slowly unraveling plot, U7 shines the most in its finely detailed living world, which is a character in itself. It's easy to suffer the same fate as I did, just enjoying the experience of travelling around in Britannia and meeting random strangers. Loads of side quests to do, mostly heroic, but some mundane as being a helping hand harvesting crops of making bread. On the minus side, a somewhat confusing approach to group management and combat, but nevertheless a near-perfect experience and the crowning achievement of the Ultima series along with Underworld.

Still amazing

To this day is is still the best RPG i have played, the only thing that comes close to it is morrowind (have not played skyrim, maybe that), but its an amazing feat after all this years. The only real problem with this game is how hard it was to get in running (memory problems) but i asume all that is taken care of in the GOG version, so stop reading and buy it.

The second best RPG ever

A fantastic leap forward for every RPG's ever. With the expansion and Part 2 it's easily the best Ultima game all around. Now GOG, where's Pagan?

Genre Defining Game

To be honest, I don't think it makes any sense to try and review this game. When talking about a legend you either lived it and get sparkly eyes remembering those moments or you come across it in the future and get convinced about something really awesome. Ultima VII represents everything that is great about enjoying RPGs. No boundaries, an expansive world, an increasingly stronger hero, companions that grow with you. Add to that an epic story and you're off. This is a game for a time when imagination took you yonder and graphics and music played on that. It is the year 2012 and this classic is what it is. The magic is in the depth of this story and you get to play the Avatar. Be a hero for once. In good old fashion mode.

Why I joined GOG

Ultima 7, hands down, is my all-time favorite game and is why I joined GOG. I first played this back in 3rd grade and have played this game so many times and have put so many hours into it. OK, so maybe I am a tad bit biased due to nostalgia, however, that said, I also play many games and am still a game connoisseur. The graphics are really well done, with each NPC having their own unique portrait really fleshes out the atmosphere of the game. Every NPC has something to say and it not only just dialogue but there is a narrative in there. This is worth mentioning because I feel like NPCs in games like Skyrim just feel soulless to me. Ultima 7 just has more depth and you find yourself actually caring and interested in what the NPCs say. This really is the meat and potatoes of the game. There are TONS of things to talk about and people to see, hidden loot all over the place and the main storyline, to me, was amazingly well told. It's one of those stories that has stayed with me since. Really, I only have one gripe with U7 and that is the combat. It just feels a little clunky and for RPG players out there will feel a little out of place. This is by far the best executed Ultima to date and is just one of those timeless games. With engines like Exult, U7 can be taken one step further.
