Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play.
I've been playing quite a few hours into the game and I found a bug, The cyborg implants do not appear in the inventory. I researched them, manufactured them and can't find them. I do not know about the psionics yet since I did not build much for them yet.
Otherwise the game did not crush on me. Managed to play in window mode, thogh the resolution is fixed at 1024x763. So, the game runs just fine. it's just that i can't find those cyborg implants at all
Nice sequel
With more tactical depth ( prone , crouch , levels ... )
Quality of life improvement ( line of sight switch , .. )
Add also base management and diplomacie
Even in 2025 this game looks very engaging
( sure it won't exploit your last video card , but to my mind overall graphics are better than the 1st game )
Give it a try !
TL;DR - great game but it's very difficult to play it on ANY intel video hardware.
This is probably the best game of the series. Remember to download and install the "unofficial" patch - made by one of the devs. Bit boring if you play on very easy though.
FOR ALL INTEL VIDEO CARD USERS - this game will NOT run on Intel hardware in Windows. Period. Even if you have a monster of an Intel Video card, even if you have the latest and greatest drivers. Stop trying as the game is pretty much designed to fail when Intel drivers are detected. If you want to play it, there is a way...
To play on Intel video card, you must use LINUX and WINE (Windows emulator running in Linux). The way I do it is:
- run a virtual machine on my Windows laptop
- install ubuntu on the virtual machine, install WINE on ubuntu
- copy all files related to the games from windows to the ubuntu machine
- run the games from within ubuntu
I can do it and I get roughly the same performance as I had back in the day. High speed single core recommended ;) The game cannot really use dual cores.
The first time I saw this game was when I bought the UFO trilogy in a store, I hoped it was the sequel to one of my favorite game series, X-COM. seing that it wasn't I nearly threw the game away and only came back to try it again several months later, and lets just say I was really lucky that I didn't throw it away.
The game has an interesting story development and a mostly good combat system, it also features diplomacy, which sadly isn't that well developed, there are 3 option in diplomacy, ask for soldiers, give resources and ask for resources, this makes the diplomacy unnecisarrily simplistic, even worse its not at all a realistic exchange, for example you can have maxed out approval of certain faction, ask for resources and it resets, there is NO option for any advanced trading and you cannot trade lands/equipment/technology.
also the difficulty has some VERY steep curves, at first you will be fighting retarded reticulans(and I don't mean that as an insult, its actually a plot point that they become mentally impaired) and mutants, then before you know it you will be fighting cultists who are MUCH better equiped than you and will overwhelm you with their numbers. after you manage to win some fights with them, get some of their advanced weapons(machine guns and what not) you'd think you can kick their ass right? WRONG! by the time you get enough proper equipment and well trained soldiers to start exterminating the cultists another alien race appears on earth and heres a surprise, they are again MUCH better equiped than you! and they side with the cultists.
I know I wrote more about the cons than the pros about this game but other than these problems the game has some really immersive story line and due to the difficulty it actually becomes really suspencefull.
charecter models become more fleshed out making a stronger attachment to your team members, and at the end of the day there is nothing more satisfying than to crush thouse same cultists that used to easily overpower and outnumber you, even if the game eventually gets back at you.
