UFO: Afterlight takes us to Mars, where a human colony has been built with the help of the Reticulans not long before the events of UFO: Aftershock took place.
The Martian base is self-sustainable and provides all the necessities for the survival of humans on a foreign planet, mainly breathable air, water and food. Although the people inhabiting this colony have the technologies and knowledge required for their further development, basic survival is their major concern. Their only activity is research of a nearby excavation site, which proves the existence of an ancient, intelligent and highly developed alien civilization.
You will enter the game when the research drastically affects all the inhabitants of the Martian colony. New and unexpected enemies appear in the form of robots, built centuries ago by the unknown aliens for their protection, whose purpose is to eliminate any traces of other civilizations on Mars.

This is the best UFO/XCOM game I have ever played. XCOM is a seriously good run of games, and this one plays the best and looks the best. UFO aftershock looks good, but is a lot easier. Early XCOM just looks too dated, although strategically brilliant. The modern titles are very nice, bit lack the sense of surprise and dread.
It was great a game when released and still very playable today.
+++ Good graphics and style. Mars settings with links to previous Altar Ufos.
If only there were more games from this universe.
Played/finished several times long ago and started again if it still works after years... and it still very does.
I played all UFO/X-Com games.
It may not be good old X-COM, but it sure is a good replacement for it! There's a few pros and a few cons of course. The cons being that the story is somewhat strange at times and the squad member limit is pretty low, you can't have 20 members like in X-COM. Another con (for me personally) is the style of the graphics, I like my graphics realistic and my weapons should look like they could conceivably work. Other than that, this game holds quite nice strategy elements to it and a certain character attachment which the X-COM series had too. There's also, like many other games of this type, an uninspiring amount of variation when it comes to enemies, it doesn't make the game bad, just, not as good.
I don't want to spoil anything so, if you are VERY afraid of spoilers, look away now.
You can play with aliens in your squad(!), it's amazing for me, I love that feature. There's even "voice" for them, which makes it ever so awesome. There's also a time in the game where you can choose between two different sides of xenos in the game. Which is a nice feature, I like the idea of the Xenos not being just chaotically evil for no reason, but actually having sense and being reasonable.
People saying this is the best of the trilogy need drug testing, its atrocious.
The Premise for this game is interesting, but man oh man if you need an example of how to utterly make a hash of executing an idea look no further.
Who ever was in charge of difficulty had no idea what they were doing, its all over the place, some missions are a joke then others are nigh on impossible as it expects you capture a beast man whilst getting hammered by acid grenades from all angles and shot at by 15 other beast men and matriarchs running up to you and blowing your slow dawdling troops away in one hit.
Add this on top of your territories getting attacked almost CONSTANTLY.
Then there's the suit mechanic, if your suits get broken or isn't strong enough your guys take DoT a good idea on paper but executed abysmally which is the running theme of this game as the aforementioned grenade spam makes this a source of endless frustration.
The voice acting will make you wish you want to smash your speakers and enjoy being told "some scientists are unemployed" and "you can attack new territory" and "you need to equip the team" and "some characters have more than one class" over and over and over again.
Seriously Aftershock is far FAAAAAAR better than this, this is just a mess of game design.
I know a lot of people say its playable modded, but I'm reviewing the game at face value as is out of the box, and out of the box its dreadful.
Play aftershock, or one of the many great Total conversion mods for UFO defence and avoid this mess.
